Collaborative Research Agreements in Asia to Support Growth in Tin Consumption
May 28, 2003 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
UK — Tin Technology has signed two "Memorandums of Understanding" (MoUs) with organizations in Indonesia and Malaysia.
This is part of a strategy to undertake collaborative research into new applications for tin in the Asia region. It follows a similar agreement signed in China last year and recognizes the importance of Asia as a major tin-producing and consuming region.The signing means that both Malaysia and Indonesia now are part of a global initiative to develop and commercialize new applications for tin. The participating organizations will have access to more than 40,000 research reports on tin gathered over the past 70 years, as well as access to substantial funding.The signing of the MoU in Indonesia involved four parties:
- Tin Technology Ltd.;
- LIPI, the Indonesia Institute of Science;
- ITB, the Bandung Institute of Technology; and
- The Agency for R&D of Energy and Mineral Resources.
Directors of the major Indonesian tin producers PT Timah and PT Koba Tin and Directors of ITRI (formerly the International Tin Research Institute) witnessed the signing on May 8. Malaysia's Minister of Primary Industries, YB Dato' Seri Lim Keng Yaik, Ph.D., witnessed the signing of a MoU on May 13 involving the Tin Industry (Research & Development) Board, Tin Technology Ltd, Universiti Sains Malaysia, and the Minerals and Geoscience Department of Malaysia.The Asia region produces almost 70 percent of the world's tin and is a major consumer of the metal. China alone now accounts for 20 percent of global tin consumption, a figure that exceeds that of the U.S.
Tin Technology is a membership-based organization involved in the research, development and marketing of tin-based technologies. Its membership is drawn from Europe, the Americas and Asia-Pacific. For more information, visit www.tintechnology.com.
