Speaking of this Week reflects on events in the electronics assembly industry every Friday.
Diversity abounds this week, with progress news dominating, followed by collaborations, tradeshow and financial news, personnel announcements, and a prediction. Hold on to your hat:
- Progress: Motorola Inc.'s Semiconductor Product Sector (SPS) honored 12 companies with the company's Supplier Performance Excellence Award, while Nashua, N.H.-based Tecnomatix Technologies Ltd. was included in research firm Gartner Inc.'s latest Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Magic Quadrant. Down South, Orlando, Fla.-based Electro World Inc. (EWI) has been recommended for ISO 9001:2000/AS9100A certification by Acton, Mass.-based National Quality Assurance USA. Across the pond, Pleasanton, Calif.-based Advanced Interconnect Technologies (AIT) will consolidate and expand its assembly and test operations in its factory in Batam, Indonesia, and Parsippany, N.J.-based Matheson Tri-Gas Inc. and its Korean subsidiary completed construction on a high-purity ammonia facility located in Chonan, Korea. Finally, Tokyo-based Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd.'s facility in Numazu, Japan achieved zero emissions in the second half of the fiscal year ending March 31.
- Alliance news: Brady Corp. and ZESTRON updated their compatibility testing, while Harrisburg, Pa.-based Tyco Electronics Automation Group entered into a distribution agreement with Korea-based Mirae Group. In acquisition news, Goleta, Calif.-based Indigo Systems acquired the Applied Technology Division of Florida-based Control Systems Research Inc. Finally, Washington, D.C.-based trade organization AeA is teaming up with B2Gsource Inc. and Federal Sources Inc. (FSI) to connect members with government business opportunities.
- Tradeshow news: Northbrook, Ill.-based IPC -- Association Connecting Electronics Industries honored 66 of its members at APEX 2003 a few weeks ago, while LASER. World of Photonics, billed as the world's largest trade show for optical technology, will take place in June in Munich, Germany. Finally, IPC is seeking volunteers for its 2003 Annual Meeting and Technical Conference, taking place in September in Minneapolis.
- Mixed financial news: Wallingford, Conn.-based Amphenol Corp. said its 2003 first quarter diluted earnings per share increased 35 percent year-over-year, while sales increased 9 percent in the same period. Toronto-based Celestica didn't have such happy news to report: The EMS' first quarter revenue was down 26 percent year-over-year. Finally, Brookfield, Conn.-based Photronics priced $125 million of convertible subordinated notes.
- Two bits of personnel news: Quebec-based Cogiscan appointed Benoit Ouellet as software engineering manager for the company's line of material tracking and control systems, while Irvine, Calif.-based Newport Corp. saw Michael T. O'Neill of Miragene Inc. and Peter J. Simone, formerly of SpeedFam-IPEC Inc., join its Board of Directors.
- Finally, a prediction: Norwalk, Conn.-based Business Communications Co. Inc. forecasts the global robotics market will nearly double in size, from more than $8 billion currently to $16 billion in 2007.
This just in: According to this week's Quick Vote on www.smtmag.com, 37 percent of you will be ready for the European Union deadline for lead-free solder of July 1, 2006, 32 percent of you don't know if you will be, and 16 percent of you either say you will not be ready or don't do business in Europe.
