Shekou, Guangdong Province, China -- Universal Instruments Corp. (UIC) has opened its US $5 million manufacturing facility here, previously announced on February 4.The new state-of-the-art 4,700 sq m manufacturing facility will act as a base to service Universal Instruments ' Asian business and provide hands-on process and manufacturing training support for existing and potential customers in China.
This continued investment in Asia reflects local growth in the electronics manufacturing services (EMS) sector and original design manufacturers (ODMs), and the increasing market for mid-range component placement and production equipment.
The EMS sector is in the process of change having realized that traditional dedicated manufacturing lines lack the flexibility to meet production requirements, particularly in medium mix/medium volume environments, where increasing changeover demands require manufacturing lines that can more readily adapt to a wide range of products. With this shift in mind, Universal is launching the new GSM Genesis platform to deliver a solution for this dynamic business environment.
In addition, the growth in the market for mid-range equipment is also focused on Asia. The opening of Universal Instruments ' Shekou manufacturing base coincides with the launch of the company's new Vantis multi-purpose surface mount placement system which has been positioned to perform in the world's most cost sensitive markets: consumer electronics, audio visual equipment, PCs and peripherals.
The opening of this new facility and the launch of the mid-range machines also heralds a change in Universal Instruments ' approach to the market. Universal will be appointing more representatives to assist entry into the mid-range market in China.
The new state-of-the art Shekou facility effectively replicates the renowned world-class manufacturing process and quality programs already in operation at Universal's other manufacturing facilities around the world. It also houses the Technology Gallery, which contains displays of the advanced technologies that Universal's machines are built upon, including Vision, Drive and Interface technologies.
