Speaking of this Week -- March 14, 2003
December 31, 1969 |Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
by Christine F. Della Monaca
Speaking of this Week reflects on the electronics assembly industry every Friday.
We're making progress towards spring, slowly but surely, and the electronics assembly industry is making great strides as well. There's tons of news this week in a myriad of categories: alliances, personnel news, new certifications, tradeshow news, a financial announcement and a prediction. Let's explore:
- Here's something you don't hear every day, especially in the electronics manufacturing service realm: the formation of a new company. Electronics manufacturing industry veteran and BGA specialist Rich Breault, whose previous enterprise NETCO Automation was known for its expertise in BGA services and prototype development, founded Methuen, Mass.-based Lightspeed Manufacturing Inc. It should be interesting to see how this new company does in the current economic environment. Meanwhile, Boston-based Teradyne Inc. opened a new 84,000 sq ft Shanghai office and manufacturing facility, expanding the company's operations in China. Irvine, Calif.-based Newport Corp.'s Chandler, Ariz. Facility, part of Newport's Advanced Packaging and Automation Systems Division (APAS), achieved ISO 9001 registration, while Longmont, Colo.-based Cencorp/PMJ is celebrating an important milestone in 2003. The company has spent the last 25 years as a manufacturer of depaneling equipment for the electronics assembly and high density interconnect industries. Finally, Muenchen, Germany-based www.global-electronics.net portal offers a comprehensive and up-to-date synopsis of the state of the art together with the latest developments and trends in products and applications -- all available via the "Product Index." And San Jose, Calif.-based Ignis Optics signed its first high-volume customer order for 10 Gb/s XFP-compatible transceiver modules.
- In alliance news, Phoenix-based Avnet Electronics Marketing announced that Avnet RF & Microwave's Wavelength Design Solutions (WDS) signed an agreement with Zcomax Technologies Inc. And Portsmouth, R.I.-based International Manufacturing Services Inc. (IMS) appointed Anaheim, Calif.-based Chalman Technologies Inc. as their sales engineering representatives in the Southern California, Arizona and New Mexico territories.
- A different kind of personnel announcement: Franklin, Mass.-based JNJ Industries announced this week that Service Manager Tim McFadden has joined the War on Terror as part of the U.S. Army's Special Forces. McFadden currently is serving in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Indianapolis-based General Devices Co. has a new quality engineer in Jeffery E. Bass. The company also brought Suzanne Stasiak on board as design engineer for the company's Vent Rak and Chassis Trak products. Finally, Ignis Optics hired Steffen Koehler as vice president of marketing.
- The Minneapolis-based SMTA announced several certification and guideline initiatives this week. The association launched two three-day certification programs, one for SMT Processes and one for SMT Systems, intended for engineers with at least one year of SMT experience and competence in engineering math. The SMTA also released Testability Guidelines TP-101C to present information to test and diagnose complex circuitry.
- In tradeshow news: Teradyne Inc. participated in SEMICON China this week, demonstrating test solutions for Wireless, BBAC, PC Audio and a DVD device "made in China" on two industry leading test systems. Meanwhile, the licensee of the year for Europe in 2002 for Phoenix-based Duraswitch, Tastitalia S.p.A., announced plans for a major promotion of Duraswitch's state of the art technologies at INTERTRONIC 2003, held March 25 through 28 (Hall 7-2 of Paris Expo, Porte de Versailles). Finally, in June, NEPCON East/Electro 2003 will take place at the Bayside Expo and Conference Center in Boston, Mass. The three-day conference begins one day earlier on June 9. It will be joined by Assembly East, which spent three years in the Philadelphia area.
- A bit of financial news: Vancouver-based Nam Tai Electronics Inc. filed for a proposed public offering of 3 million common shares, of which 2 million common shares are to be offered by the company and 1 million common shares are to be offered by selling shareholders.
- Finally, a prediction: Norwalk, Conn.-based Business Communications Co. Inc. estimates that the U.S. spectroscopy market in 2002 was $2.8 billion, and will rise at an AAGR (average annual growth rate) of 9.1 percent to reach $4.3 billion by 2007.
