Speaking of this Week -- February 21, 2003
December 31, 1969 |Estimated reading time: 2 minutes
By Christine F. Della Monaca
Speaking of this Week reflects on events in the electronics assembly industry every Friday.
It was a short week for most of us, and for those of us in the Northeast, a snowy one. These factors didn't staunch the flow of news this week, which ranged from progress to word of companies working together to trade show news, as well as financial and personnel news. Read on:
- In progress news, lots of awards: Singapore-based EMS giant Flextronics was busiest of all, handing out Global Supplier Performance Awards to seven of its top suppliers. Meanwhile, Goleta, Calif.-based Indigo Systems Corp. was honored for the second year in a row by the Santa Barbara Human Resources Association (SBHRA) for its human resources program, and Wilmington, Mass.-based GSI Lumonics Inc. was recognized by Samsung Electronics as a Top 20 equipment supplier. Randy Heyler, vice president of business development for Irvine, Calif.-based Newport Corp., was named 2003 Steering Committee chairman for the Photonics Manufacturing Association Council (PMAC). Finally, UK-based SOLDERTEC is offering SMEs the opportunity to prepare for the upcoming July 1, 2006 deadline for lead-free in Europe.
- Companies are working together, and it's good to see: Fujitsu Ltd., NEC Electronics Corp. and Toshiba Corp. have reached agreement on common specifications for Pseudo Static Random Access Memory (PSRAM) devices that feature burse mode function. Also this week, Helsinki, Finland-based Elcoteq Network Corp. picked Motorola Inc.'s Innovative Convergence i.200 and i.250 platforms for advanced wireless handset development, while Phoenix-based Duraswitch licensee IN2TEC has received a production order from one of the UK's largest gas pump manufacturers for Duraswitch's PushGate technology. Finally, Wichita, Kan.-based Lee Air Inc. bought an Automove A-402 dispensing system from Carlsbad, Calif.-based Asymtek for their aviation electronics facility.
- Some news on upcoming trade shows: Northbrook, Ill.-based IPC -- Association Connecting Electronics Industries announced the numerous free offerings at its IPC Printed Circuits Expo, taking place March 23 through 27 in Long Beach, Calif. Meanwhile, Bethlehem, Pa.-based FlexLink Systems Inc. will hold a forum in the technical symposium during IPC's APEX 2003 on April 2. Finally, Gregory S. Shelton, vice president of engineering and technology for Raytheon Co. will present "Design for Six Sigma" at NEPCON East/Electro on June 10.
- Some financial news: Herzlia, Israel-based Tecnomatix Technologies Ltd. reported fourth quarter and full year 2002 results, which were essentially flat year-over-year. And Milpitas, Calif.-based Solectron Corp. expired its 364-day credit facility on February 13, launching a new 364-day, $200 million one to replace it.
- Finally, some personnel news: LaFox, Ill.-based Richardson Electronics Ltd. appointed Philippe Ansoult as product marketing manager for the RF and Wireless Communications (RWC) business unit in Europe.
