Speaking of this Week -- February 14, 2003
December 31, 1969 |Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
By Christine F. Della Monaca
Speaking of this Week reflects on events in the electronics assembly industry every Friday.
Love is in the air, and so is a buzz of activity in the industry. Personnel news moves to the forefront this week, with some major announcements being made. There's also the requisite partnership and acquisition news, as well as news of progress, financial results and tradeshow announcements. Here we go:
- Personnel news from high places came in droves this week. For example, Loveland, Colo.-based Agilent Technologies' Manufacturing Test Business Unit appointed vice president and long-time general manager Kamran Firooz as vice president and general manager of the company's Operations Support Systems Division (OSSD), effective March 3. Meanwhile, George A. Shaw Jr. is the new senior vice president of operations and managing director of manufacturing for Hong Kong-based ASAT Holdings Ltd. Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based Bosch Rexroth Corp. has had some personnel changes as well, what with Bob Rickert stepping down as president and chief executive officer and Wolfgang Dangel, currently an executive vice president and chief financial officer, stepping up to the plate. The Irvine, Calif.-based ASSA ABLOY Identification Technology Group promoted David Sullivan to vice president of business development for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Boone, N.C.-based TT electronics IRC Wire and Advanced Film Division appointed Don Bolster as TRESCO general manager, while San Jose, Calif.-based Photon Dynamics Inc. named Jeffrey A. Hawthorne as the company's senior vice president to manage the Flat Panel Display business, an area the company is focusing on. Finally, the San Diego-based PXI Systems Alliance (PXISA) named Teradyne Marketing Manager Bob Stasonis as its president and Geotest President Loofie Gutterman as its new director of marketing.
- Companies come together: DEK bought Acumen Technology, allowing the company to place its PumpPrint stencil production site in Guadalajara, Mexico to serve North and South American customers, while TESCO bought additional licenses and consulting services valued at more than US $600,000 from Nashua, N.H.-based Tecnomatix Technologies Ltd. Meanwhile, Scharding, Austria-based EV Group (EVG) concluded a multimillion-dollar equipment purchase agreement with Taipei, Taiwan-based Asia Pacific Microsystems Inc., and Bloomington, Minn.-based PolarFab formed an agreement with Santa Clara, Calif.-based Silvaco to provide mutual customers with analog process design kits. Maple Grove, Minn.-based Circuit Check Inc. acquired Richardson, Texas-based Southwest Test Inc., and Phoenix-based Suntron Corp. formed a strategic partnership with Portland, Ore.-based UMD Technology to provide engineering services based on RF/wireless, medical and electronics commerce. Finally, Westford, Mass.-based Teradyne's Assembly Test Division and Italy-based Marconi Selenia Communications have completed their digital test unit integration for military and aerospace programs.
- Some progress news: Carlsbad, Calif.-based Asymtek received the Factory Mutual Research Rating for their Century C-740 and C-741 selective conformal coating systems.
- Some encouraging financial announcements: Cambridge, Ontario, Canada-based ATA Automation Tooling Systems Inc. reported its financial results for the third quarter of fiscal 2003, which included a 24 percent increase in revenue driven by strong growth in automation systems, precision components and solar operations. And Philadelphia-based Rohm & Haas Co. reported fourth quarter sales of $1.4 billion, a 7 percent increase over the same period in 2001.
- Finally, some tradeshow news: The Minneapolis-based SMTA is launching a Mission to China April 7 through 8 for just 20 SMTA members to begin developing government and industry contacts there. And Northbrook, Ill.-based IPC -- Association Connecting Electronics Industries will hold a special ceremony during IPC Printed Circuits Expo 2003 to honor 42 exhibitors, as well as hold its third annual International Conference on Lead-Free Electronic Assemblies on April 22 through 24 in conjunction with JEDEC.
This just in: Some of you seem befuddled as to your company's online investments. When asked in this week's Quick Vote, "How much is your company investing in online sales of its products and services?," 33 percent of you said "somewhat," but 33 percent more of you said you were not sure.
