Sanmina-SCI to Acquire Three Alcatel Locations SAN JOSE, Calif. and PARIS Sanmina-SCI Corp. purchased the assets of Alcatel's manufacturing facilities in Cherbourg, France; Gunzenhausen, Germany; and Toledo, Spain.
The transaction is expected to close by the summer of 2002, and is subject to approval from various regulatory bodies in the United States and Europe, and appropriate consultation with worker councils in each of these locations.
Alcatel's three European manufacturing facilities comprise nearly 1 million sq. ft. and include ISO-certified full system integration and test and order fulfillment capabilities. Approximately 1,500 employees work at these locations, and will become Sanmina-SCI employees.
The Cherbourg, France facility produces a range of point-to-point microwave systems for worldwide applications in all frequency bands from 1.5 to 38.0 GHz, and will allow Sanmina-SCI to provide expanded services to its European customers in the areas of radio frequency and microwave full system integration and test.
The Gunzenhausen, Germany facility produces high-end voice switching and data transmission systems for central office applications, and will provide Sanmina-SCI's German and other European customers with immediate access to a full-service manufacturing facility, which will provide a broad range of electronics manufacturing services (EMS).
The Toledo, Spain facility produces a full range of wireline access products, which deliver narrowband, broadband and next-generation services to Alcatel's customers. The Toledo facility will serve as Sanmina-SCI's Center of Excellence for wireline access product manufacturing and test in Europe.

The training program was developed through input from the IPC EMS Management Council, and is tailored specifically to EMS program managers, with such topics as operations inventory management, finance, contract management and leadership skills. PMC Formed to Help EMS CompaniesEL PASO, Texas Powell-Mucha Consulting (PMC) was formed by Susan Mucha to help EMS companies and their customers better align processes and programs with changing business models.
PMC focuses on six key areas: project transition optimization; team building; merger and acquisition analysis and support; sales and marketing analysis and realignment; new program introduction, such as ISO 9000:2000, ERP systems, changes in supply chain management and changes in target customer markets; and diversity training, particularly cross-border.
Common problems that EMS companies can develop in high-change environments include inconsistencies in product launch between different facilities, inconsistencies in marketing strategy that dilute results or increase cost, and lack of cohesion between teams at existing facilities and newly acquired facilities. Having a third party analyze the problem, build consensus for a solution and then start the implementation process often is the fastest way to correct course.
Mucha has more than 20 years of EMS experience, having worked for numerous EMS companies including SCI Systems, Flextronics and Elamex. She is affiliated with several consultants with equal tenure in the industry.
