Flextronics Awards Supplier Commitment SINGAPORE Flextronics Corp. awarded Morrisville, N.C.-based Juki Automation Systems a Supplier Commitment Award for its commitment to customer service. The award recognizes Juki's fulfillment of a pledge to serve Flextronics while its operations were transferred from Austin, Texas to its Richardson, Texas location. Juki supplied complete surface mount assembly (SMA) lines including feeders, programs, feeder carts, capacity analysis, spare parts and manpower for evaluation during the transitional months.
EFTC Opens New FacilityLAWRENCE, Mass. EFTC Inc., a provider of high-mix electronics manufacturing services, opened a 75,000 sq. ft. facility.
EFTC has two major facilities in the Northeast. The Lawrence facility, which replaces a facility in Wilmington, Mass., features full printed circuit board (PCB) assembly, cable and harness assembly, and electromechanical assembly. The facility also can handle engineering design to modify retrofit or assist in design for manufacturability (DFM) or design for test. The other facility, in Manchester, N.H., is 40,000 sq. ft. and handles prototype and quick-turn services.
"EFTC has a strong commitment to the Northeast," said Jim Bass, president and CEO. "We see the Northeast as a key area for technology and technology development. We're a business that's into high-mix electronics, which means typically low-volume, very configurable, highly engineered products. These two facilities serve that market very well."
Philips Electronics Moves into Contract ManufacturingNETHERLANDS EINDHOVEN Philips Electronics NV's PCB assembly division is pushing into CM. The unit of Philips has 13 locations in the Americas, Asia and Europe, and plans to market its design, manufacturing and logistics services to other OEMs. The company will rename its PCB/Assembly operations Philips Contract Manufacturing Services. The unit expects to generate more than 30 percent of its total revenue from external customers in three to four years.
IEC Adds PersonnelNEWARK, N.Y. IEC Electronics Corp. added Michael Sementelli and Cindy Boyer-Malak to its sales team. Each joins IEC with more than a decade of electronics manufacturing services (EMS) sales experience.
Sementelli has been named director of Northeast sales, and will focus on new account development. He has more than 12 years of new business development experience in the PCB and EMS industries, most recently as director of Northeast sales at Vestal, N.Y.-based contract manufacturer (CM) MATCO Electronics.
Boyer-Malak has been named director of Midwest sales, and will be responsible for new business development in the Midwestern and Central United States. Boyer-Malak has 18 years of sales and marketing experience in the electronics field. Prior to joining IEC, she was a business development manager for Plexus and OEM account manager with Visiontek, both Midwest-based CMs.

Sun Microsystems Honors Solectron, CelesticaTORONTO and MILIPITAS, Calif. Sun Microsystems Inc. awarded Solectron Corp. with the Best-in-Class Supplier Performance Award for Electronics Manufacturing, while awarding Celestica Inc. a Supplier Performance Award for the fifth consecutive year.Solectron received the award at its 2001 Sun Supplier Awards & Forum in Santa Clara, Calif., while Celestica received its award at the 11th Annual Supplier Performance Awards in Palo Alto, Calif.
ems-ALLIANCE Launched at ProductronicaMUNICH, Germany The ems-ALLIANCE, launched at Productronica in November 2001, consists of six companies in six different countries Brazil, China, India, Italy, Sweden and the United States that form a worldwide EMS network of independent and equal providers.
Swedish EMS company NOTE AB took the initiative to form ems-ALLIANCE. The basic idea behind the alliance is to offer local electronics production so that users can stay with their local producer and still reach the entire world.
The ems-ALLIANCE offers a total capacity of 1 million cph, 2,000 employees and a total production area of 60,000 sq. m. worldwide. The companies involved are VRI-Indústria Eletrõnica Ltd. of Brazil, Rangsons Electronics of India, NOTE AB of Sweden, LeeMAH Holdings Ltd. of China, Elem S.p.A of Italy and Xetel Corp. of the United States.
TrueTime Chooses Able Electronics as ProviderHAYWARD, Calif. Able Electronics Inc., a leading EMS company that serves OEMs in the telecommunications, test and measurement, medical instruments, computer peripherals, and industrial controls markets, has been appointed manufacturing partner for Santa Rosa, Calif.-based TrueTime Inc., a leading provider of precision time and frequency products.
Able Electronics will manufacture a range of timing and frequency products, used in such applications as network synchronization. Able focuses on serving all levels of vertical integration from design, prototype, material procurement and management, to order fulfillment.
Flextronics, Cal Poly Sponsor, Develop Educational Web SiteSINGAPORE and SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. Flextronics and California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) teamed up to sponsor and develop an educational Web site that explores the manufacturing of electronics products.
The goal of www.flextech101.com is to provide students and professionals with an overview of critical electronics manufacturing issues and processes. Complex issues such as design, prototyping and electronics products manufacturing are explored in an effort to educate students and professionals in the field of product manufacturing. Flextronics reportedly will continue working with educational institutions and making resources available to engineering universities throughout the country in an effort to develop innovative ways to make learning more accessible and effective.
Chase EMS Introduces New ServicesWESTBRIDGE, Mass. Chase EMS Group is offering HumiSeal conformal coating services for printed circuit assemblies (PCA). HumiSeal makes conformal coatings to protect virtually any PCA against contamination. These conformal coatings reportedly provide a secure envelope around a circuit board and its components, and act as a barrier against moisture, fungus, dust and other environmental contaminants.
Chase EMS Group is a full-service provider of electronics manufacturing solutions and consists of three fully integrated divisions, including RWA in Melrose, Mass.; Sunburst EMS in West Bridgewater, Mass.; and Netco Automation in Haverhill, Mass.
Sanmina Acquires E-M-SolutionsSAN JOSE, Calif. Sanmina Corp. acquired certain assets of E-M-Solutions Inc., a privately held international electronics enclosure manufacturer. These assets include certain manufacturing operations in the United States, as well as the stock of E-M-Solutions' subsidiaries incorporated in Mexico and Northern Ireland.
The transaction includes both advanced engineering design as well as electronics enclosure manufacturing facilities and electromechanical integration services. Both companies reportedly target similar market sectors, such as high-end computing, data storage/networking and telecommunications. E-M-Solutions' OEM customers include EMC, LTX and Sun Microsystems.
MSL Holds Ceremony in Honor of CatenaARDEN HILLS, Minn. Manufacturers' Services Ltd. (MSL) hosted a ceremony at its Arden Hills facility to commemorate their multi-million dollar relationship with Catena Networks. Catena Networks selected MSL as its EMS provider for the company's significant expertise in building complex, high-end products, and in testing and building broadband products. MSL's worldwide presence also appealed to Catena because of the opportunity to expand as their market grows globally.
The MSL facility helps create Catena Networks' broadband access products that enable the mass-market deployment of broadband DSL service.
Solectron Acquires Stream InternationalMILIPITAS, Calif. Solectron Corp. acquired Stream International Inc., a global customer relationship management (CRM) outsourcing and support services provider for leading technology companies.
The acquisition is said to increase the capabilities of Solectron's Global Services business unit and enhance the company's total service offerings. Through the transaction, Solectron reportedly has become one of the world's 10 largest providers of CRM outsourcing services, and gains customer support capabilities, which include customer service and technical support. Stream operates 22 contact centers in North America, Asia and Europe.
Stream, a Solectron Co., maintains its brand identity and operates within Solectron's Global Services unit, which provides a full range of post-manufacturing services, including product repair, upgrades, remanufacturing and maintenance through factory and fast-hub service centers located around the world; help desk support through customer call-in centers for end-users; logistics and parts management; asset recovery; returns processing; warehousing; engineering change management; and end-of-life manufacturing. Solectron Global Services currently has sites on five continents.
