electronica 2002 Explores the Booming Field of MEMS
October 30, 2002 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
Chicago -- Electronica 2002, the world's largest electronics trade show taking place November 12 through 15 in Munich, Germany, will feature a special forum for visitors to learn about the latest MEMS products and trends.
MEMS components and subsystems for use in mobile communications, sensor systems, optics and data transmission, automotive systems, and medical technology will be presented and displayed during the forum, which takes place every day of electronica.electronica has been an important meeting place for developers, buyers and product managers in the MEMS industry. Now, for the first time, a forum will be devoted exclusively to the MEMS market, which is expected to grow up to 200 percent in the U.S. by 2005, becoming an $8 to 15 billion industry."The World of MEMS" user forum is free with admission to electronica 2002, which is expected to draw 85,000 international visitors and 3,000 exhibitors. Specifically at the new forum, the four fastest developing MEMS segments will be presented and discussed by industry leaders: RF MEMS, MEMS sensors, optical MEMS and MEMS packaging. MEMS are semiconductor chips that have a top layer of mechanical devices such as mirrors or fluid devices. It is an enabling technology that supports and creates key functions in several electronics sectors. The U.S.-based MEMS Industry Group's 2001 Annual Report listed the industry at $2-5 billion in 2000. In the last three years, the MEMS Industry Group has reported at least 10 newly founded companies per year, thus contributing to its 200 percent predicted grow rate by 2005. Currently, the automotive industry is the biggest driver for rapid expansion of MEMS, encompassing 37 percent of the MEMS market in 2001. Other growing sectors include optical switching and biomedics. Up-and-coming sectors are image sensors, digital television products, game controllers and data storage. Many of these areas will be covered in "The World of MEMS" forum, taking place in hall A3.In addition to "The World of MEMS," electronica 2002 will cover the entire spectrum of electronics. Exhibits will cover topics including embedded systems, semiconductors, sensors and microsystems, passive components, displays, and power supplies. The field of automotive electronics will be presented in the Automotive Innovation Arena, an area where exhibitors can present live applications, and the 3rd International Congress for the 42-V PowerNet.For more information on electronica 2002, visit www.munichtradefairs.com.
