'Glass Pipeline' Is Core Message From Outsourcing OEMs, Says Quarterly Forum Participants
October 9, 2002 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
Alameda, Calif. -- According to mid-tier and large-tier outsourcing OEM companies at the Quarterly Forum for Electronics Manufacturing Outsourcing and Supply Chain on September 20, 2002, in San Jose, having a "glass pipeline" is core to successful supply chain management.
Mid-tier OEMs Teradyne and Emulex, whose EMS companies also are in the mid-tier, and large-tier OEMs Cisco Systems and Sun Microsystems, who rely mostly on large-tier EMS companies, spoke at Technology Forecasters Inc.'s (TFI) Quarterly Forum on an industry panel entitled, "Views and Expectations for Outsourced Manufacturing."
The term "glass pipeline" captures the OEMs' desire to outsource more supply chain responsibility to manufacturing partners, and the need to balance this with improved access to real-time data.
Other issues discussed include:
- Desire to maintain ownership of the relationships with key component suppliers
- EMS companies' inability to effectively manage inventory across a manufacturing base created through acquisition and containing non-integrated communications platforms
- Key criteria for an effective supply chain
- Balancing a global manufacturing footprint with the push towards China
The OEM panel was preceded by a keynote talk on the ODM/JDM manufacturing model by the president of Arima Group, North America, Greg Memo. Other topics covered were automotive electronics outsourcing trends and an analysis of regional differences for manufacturing in China. Participating in this session were also approximately 70 people from member organizations. The next Quarterly Forum will be held in San Jose on December 3, 2002. TFI will present the Annual Outsourced Manufacturing Industry Forecast by Ten Industry Sectors and Six Regions, which includes a detailed analysis of the Original Design Manufacturing (ODM) industry, Analysis of Outsourced Manufacturing by Five Service Categories, and Repercussions When OEMs Outsource Too Much. The Quarterly Forum is presented by strategic consulting firm Technology Forecasters Inc., and comprises 15 industry reports and four events each year.
