SMTA International will feature events dedicated to electronic interconnection hot topics such as SMT, optoelectronics, system in a package, flip chip, MEMS, chip scale, BGA, automotive and more. More than 700 companies are exhibiting at ATExpo, with new products on display in more than 50 categories. With 36 courses; 110 technical papers and panel discussions; and focused symposiums on emerging technologies, contract manufacturing and lead-free, as well as workshops on reflow soldering profiles and flex circuits, SMTA International offers something for every electronics interconnect industry professional. Conference hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and show hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. September 24 and 25, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. September 26.
Conferences and Tutorials
Tutorials are full- (7 hour) and half-day (3.5 hour) educational courses led by industry professionals with experience in the subject area of the course. Course leaders deliver focused, in-depth presentations on topics of current importance to the industry, based on their research and industry experience. Tutorials are application-oriented and structured to combine field experience with scientific research to solve everyday problems.
Topics for Sunday, September 22, and Monday, September 23 include manufacturing and assembly; advanced packaging; substrates; soldering; test, inspection and quality; and process control. On Thursday, September 26, the focus is on test, inspection and quality, and process control.
Technical Sessions
In these 1.5-hour sessions, three technical papers are presented under the direction of a chairman. Each paper presented relates to the main subject of the session, and is followed by audience questions.
Tracks for the Tuesday and Wednesday sessions include manufacturing and assembly; advanced packaging; substrates; soldering; test, inspection and quality; process control; and contract manufacturing and business issues.
Symposiums
The Emerging Technologies Summit and two symposiums will take place during SMTA International. The Summit and Contract Manufacturing Symposium are full-day events running on Monday, and the Lead-free Symposium is a full-day event running on Thursday.
Monday's topics include: optoelectronics assembly, system in a package, MEMS/ MOEMS, emerging technologies, EMS management, controlling variable process lines, customer service in an EMS environment and the economy's impact on EMS.
Thursday's topics include: materials performance in lead-free solder, lead-free production issues, lead-free processing in circuit assembly, lead-free reliability and contamination effects, and the status of lead-free soldering technology.
Workshops
Two workshops during SMTA International, both taking place on Thursday, are half-day courses taught by electronics industry professionals with extensive experience in the subject area of the program. Workshops are application-oriented and serve as both a primer for those new to a technology and as a refresher course for those wanting to review and update their knowledge.
Special Events
Emerging Technologies Summit, held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, September 23, will discuss the world of emerging technologies. Optoelectronics is leading the RT parade, lighting the way for the Internet and other spheres of communications. Specific topics include optical MEMS, as well as the ability of optoelectronics to adopt successful topics from electronics like integration, DFM and automation. Dense packaging also will be discussed, as will RF's status in the communications arena.
SMTA Annual Meeting/Keynote Luncheon, taking place from 12 to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24, will feature an address from Michael C. Schexnayder, associate director for the Systems Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center, U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command, Redstone Arsenal. Schexnayder's speech, "Ultra-high Reliability U.S. Army Missiles and Munitions," will touch on new techniques for monitoring the health of advanced weapons as a means of assuring their reliability. The information provided by monitoring activities is to be used not only to establish an immediate status of weapon functionality but also to develop new prognostics capabilities for predicting the future reliability of fielded ordinances.
Also during the Annual Meeting, Arun Gowda of Binghamton University will be presented with the 2002 Charles Hutchins Educational Grant by Hutchins Grant Committee chairperson Laura Turbini, Ph.D., of the University of Toronto.
Networking Reception, held from 5 to 6:30 p.m., gives showgoers a chance to chat with colleagues and enjoy refreshments after a busy day on the show floor.
