Carrier TapeTest-in-Pocket precision carrier tape is said to allow in-pocket component testing through use of a solder ball test "window." High-precision molding and highly controlled pocket/test window tolerances are said to give the user the ability to make and package the component prior to testing. Components reportedly are held in alignment and are accessible for test by pogo-pin or alternate test contactors. Alignment accuracy is assured for singulated or gang-testing solder ball contact for BGA, flip chip or CSP components without removing the components from the carrier tape. 3M, Austin, Texas.
High-precision Print HeadRotary Squeegee is a high-precision print head with enclosed print material (solder, adhesive, etc.) allotted from inexpensive laminated plastic bags. The squeegee applies the "paste rolling formula" while the real-time paste monitor ensures the optimum amount (diameter) of solder paste in front of the squeegee at all times. The rolling of the paste reportedly guarantees a stable print process paramount for high-yield, fine-pitch printing and wafer bumping. Also, the print head is ready to be used with nitrogen as an option to avoid paste oxidation. Minami America Inc., Torrance, Calif.
Static Dissipative LaminatesStatNot static dissipative laminates feature a proprietary high-temperature glass epoxy formation, and are ideal for protecting sensitive electronic component applications from ESD damage. Applications are said to include assembly, testing and manufacturing work surfaces, or any other application in which electrostatic dissipative protection is needed. In addition to work surfaces, these laminates reportedly can be used in assembly fixtures, solder pallets, carrier pallets, enclosures and automated test equipment. Micarta, Hampton, S.C.
MOSFET TechnologyThe 30 V P-Channel PowerTrench MOSFET technology features enhanced rugged-gate technology with 25 V gate-to-source maximum rating, which is said to be ideal for operation in battery charger and disconnect applications for notebook computers and other portable electronics. In these applications, input voltages typically are as high as 22 V. Prior to the introduction of this technology, maximum gate ratings reportedly were no higher than 20 V. The new MOSFET, which includes lower RDS(on), lower gate charge and faster switching characteristics, is said to be ideal for battery charging and other DC/DC applications. Fairchild Semiconductor International, San Jose, Calif.
COMPONENTS
Screwless Wire ConnectorBUCHANAN vertical screwless wire connector is said to be a cross between a conventional board mount wire connector and a terminal block. The product currently is offered in a six-position configuration, and is spaced on 3.5 mm staggered centerlines. Other position counts are possible. An 18 AWG solid or tinned stranded wire may be used with this product for poke-in termination. The contacts also may be re-terminated up to five times and carry a 2 A/600 V AC current rating. The connector reportedly features kinked contact legs to provide PCB retention before and during wave solder. Tyco Electronics, Harrisburg, Pa.
MOSFET DriversSi9912 and Si9913 half-bridge MOSFET drivers are optimized for single-input, high-frequency switching in DC/DC converters. By offloading the power MOSFET drive requirement from the controller IC, the devices reportedly increase system design flexibility for various power conversion designs used in desktop and notebook computers, computer peripheral products, and consumer electronics products. The drivers offer an extended input voltage range of 4.5 to 30.0 V, with a supply voltage of 4.5 to 5.5 V. Siliconix, a Vishay Intertechnology Inc. Co., Malvern, Pa.
CONTRACT SERVICES
Optical Materials Testing ServicesThis company offers test services for optical properties of clear epoxies and encapsulants. Reportedly, a series of standardized tests for optical transmission, thermo-optic coefficients and refractive index vs. wavelength and temperature have been developed. Price is per sample, with discounts for multiple samples. Curing and preparation of samples is included; turnaround time is one to three weeks with 48-hour rush services available. The test data may be used for troubleshooting suspect lots of material, design qualification of materials for design performance and lot sample materials for ongoing production quality control. Fiber Optic Center Inc., New Bedford, Mass.
Contract Inspection ServicesThe company offers contract inspection services using its X-ray inspection equipment, expertise and technology. The service reportedly gives manufacturers of SMT boards, semiconductor components and PCBs the flexibility of offloading nondestructive testing and assembly inspections using X-ray equipment. This option is said to allow customers the benefits of X-ray inspection without purchasing a machine. phoenix|x-ray Systems + Services Inc., Camarillo, Calif.
LITERATURE
BGA Socket and Adapter CatalogThe BGA socket and adapter catalog features Rollerball sockets with solder ball technology. These sockets feature a solder ball that is assembled mechanically into the terminal and positioned closer to the PCB for accurate soldering, and reportedly represents an innovative and cost-effective solution for PCB coplanarity assembly problems. The company offers BGA adapters and sockets with footprints of more than 1,900 pins. Andon Electronics Corp., Lincoln, R.I.
Switching Solutions CatalogMaster Catalog 100 is composed of products and services to help designers find the best solutions to their switch control needs. The 180-page catalog reportedly includes a 32-page products section describing the latest developments in the company's switching components and integrated assemblies such as touch-sensitive switches, robust door pushbuttons, and many different LED indicators in colors and styles for varied design requirements. The expanded general catalog listings are said to include miniature PCB key switches, vandal-resistant keypads, slide and rotary changeover switches, as well as a heavy-duty series 44 oil and watertight switching section. EAO Switch Corp., Milford, Conn.
REWORK & REPAIR
Rework StationM-8000 rework station reportedly removes and remounts a wide range of components and produces assemblies that equal those produced in original assembly by combining simple controls with advanced design and technique. The rework station includes pad cleaning, dispensing and soldering/desoldering tools, plus nozzles to work with ICs, PLCCs or QFPs, and tools for the most popular BGAs and CSPs. Included SolderStar software is said to feature an expandable component library and real-time, three-channel thermal profiling. Manncorp, Huntingdon Valley, Pa.
BGA/SMT Rework SystemBANDIT BGA/SMT rework system is said to offer high-power, low-temperature rework, flexibility and programmability in a precise and repeatable system. Incorporating electromechanical/pneumatic operation, the rework system reportedly is a lead-free compliant, CE certified benchtop unit that uses controlled, directed heated air and interchangeable nozzles to remove, align and replace BGAs, SMDs, connectors and other devices quickly and repeatably without PCBA damage. Its high-power/low-temperature operation is said to rework a wide range of components safely. A.P.E., Key Largo, Fla.
SMT MATERIALS
Conformal CoatingEccocoat UV 7993 one-component, solventless UV light and moisture cure conformal coating is urethane-based and is said to offer chemical and moisture resistance, mechanical toughness and a resilience that minimizes potential component stress. This coating reportedly emerges tack-free within 5 to 7 seconds after UV exposure, and "shadow" cure areas that may not be reached directly by the UV finish cross-linking at room temperature. This dual cure system can be applied anywhere from 0.001 to 0.040" thick. Emerson & Cuming, Billerica, Mass.
Silicon-based Coatings1900 Series is a family of three silicon-based conformal coatings reportedly formulated to deliver performance, PCB protection, cost-of-use advantages and compliance with most international regulatory standards to enable consistent material supply worldwide. In contrast to organic materials such as acrylic and urethane that cure to a rigid protective coating, these silicon-based coatings are said to offer flexible, low-stress protection for fine-pitch leads and delicate components, thus improving IC and PCB reliability. Dow Corning Corp., Midland, Mich.
