Speedline Launches InitiativesFRANKLIN, Mass. Speaking at a recent industry trade show, Tom Edwards, semiconductor product business manager at Speedline Technologies Inc., outlined the underlying trends in today's semiconductor industry, and highlighted the main strategies being adopted by equipment suppliers in anticipation of an upturn.
With the economic and competitive environment changed from recent years in each of the world's four major semiconductor trade regions, namely the United States, Europe, Japan and Asia-Pacific, Edwards said that to survive, equipment suppliers supporting the semiconductor business should partner closely with customers to focus on product and process development, and prepare for expanded productivity to prepare for the eventual upturn.
Speedline itself has announced initiatives to strengthen the company's reported position as the world leader for single-source process solutions for the printed circuit board (PCB) assembly and semiconductor industry. These include further realignment and consolidation of the company's facilities and functions, as well as a 250 employee workforce reduction in the United States and Europe. According to the company, these changes are balanced with strategic worldwide investments in research and development (R&D) and a commitment to strengthen product and service offerings, as well as refinements to the European service and distribution network that currently are underway.

Assembly Community Attended ATExpoNORWALK, Conn. Assembly Technology Expo (ATExpo) was held October 2 to 4 at the Donald E. Stephens Center in Rosemont, Ill. Taking place only a few weeks after the September 11 tragic events, attendance exceeded expectations as many exhibitors and thousands of attendees responded to the call of "getting back to business."
"12,311 industry professionals in attendance at this year's event are closer in number to 1999 and years previous," said Kelvin Marsden-Kish, ATExpo vice president. "[Year2000] had the highest recorded attendance in the 22 years of ATExpo and during a growth economy. Although 2001 attendance decreased by 21 percent, overall we attracted qualified buyers that came to the event with a buying agenda the key to any exhibitor having a profitable show experience."
As the largest and most comprehensive "all assembly" event in the United States, ATExpo has become recognized as a marketplace for the assembly community. Newly developed conference programs were created for the 2001 show as well as featuring the co-located FIBEROPTIC Automation Expo conference track designed to provide automation and assembly solutions.
"Assembly Technology Expo 2001 was not only a place of business but a place to congregate and offer each other support as a reminder that we are indeed a community," said Marsden-Kish.
