Sparton Adds to Board of DirectorsJACKSON, Mich. Sparton Corp., an electronics design and manufacturing services provider, elected James D. Fast to the Board of Directors.
Fast is president and CEO of the Ionia County National Bank (ICNB) in Ionia, Mich. Additionally, Fast has an extensive background in the banking and financial industries with more than 30 years of experience. He graduated from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at the University of Delaware and Jackson Community College. Fast's term as a member of the Sparton Board of Directors will expire in 2003.
Procurement Firm Adds CMs to Supplier BaseDANVERS, Mass. ThreeCore Inc., a provider of third-party procurement services for custom materials, added electronics contract manufacturing (CM) services to their supplier base. The new CM services including design, prototype and production of electronic and mechanical assemblies will allow OEMs and other manufacturers to outsource various non-core competencies. This offering is in response to the industry-wide trend toward lean manufacturing via best practices in procurement and supply chain management.
"[CM], third-party logistics and outsourced procurement are becoming the basic requirements of a sourcing initiative that is truly strategic," said Tom Collins, vice president of Operations. "These three capabilities unite to assure that suppliers are flexible and responsive, with top-quality goods delivered on time, a combination that resonates throughout the supply chain by allowing purchasing groups to refocus on more strategic tasks."
Celestica Recognizes GenRad and KOA Corp.TORONTO Celestica Inc., an EMS provider, awarded GenRad Inc. and KOA Corp. at Celestica's third annual Global Supplier Awards. The awards were given in recognition of outstanding achievements and support of Celestica's EMS goals.
A first year Partners in Performance award was presented to GenRad Inc., a leader in electronics testing and manufacturing solutions.
"GenRad is pleased to be recognized by an industry leader like Celestica," said Robert M. Dutkowsky, chairman, president and CEO of GenRad.
Additionally, a third year Partners in Performance award was presented to KOA Corp.
"KOA's support of Celestica's supply chain requirements were essential to the success of Celestica's relationships with its customers," said Karlheinz Totz, Celestica's vice president of Corporate Commodity Management.
Delta Group Electronics Announces New AgreementALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Delta Group Electronics Inc., an EMS company offering turnkey CM solutions and technical services, agreed to provide PCB assembly services to two divisions, Sypris Solutions Inc. Bell Technologies in Orlando, Fla., and Metrum-Datatape Inc. in Littleton, Colo. Under this agreement, Delta Group will assume all raw material purchasing, assembly requirements and product testing previously handled directly by Sypris.
"This relationship with Sypris enhances Delta's operations in Rockledge, Fla. and Albuquerque, N.M.," said Steven E. Klein, president of Delta Group Electronics. "At a time when other EMS companies are suffering from reduced production requirements in the telecom area, Delta has continued to grow by focusing on companies like Sypris that are outsourcing their non-core electronic assembly operations."
MSL's CEO and Founder is RecognizedCONCORD, Mass. Manufacturers' Services Ltd., a global EMS company, announced that Kevin Melia, CEO and founder of MSL, was selected as Ernst & Young's manufacturing Entrepreneur of The Year for the New England Region. Melia has grown the company to approximately $1.8 billion in annual revenue since its starting in 1994. Additionally, Melia has assembled a staff of seasoned executives to help lead the company.
"Kevin Melia possessed the key characteristics of a successful entrepreneur, including commitment, leadership, vision, innovation, performance, community spirit, empowerment of management and perseverance," said Joseph Vicidomino, partner and New England area leader of technology communications and entertainment industry sectors at Ernst & Young.
Melia was chosen among 51 finalists by an independent panel of judges and also is one of 13 regional award winners who will compete with winners from 47 other regions for national awards at the National Entrepreneur of The Year Conference in Palm Springs, Calif.
The New England Entrepreneur of the Year Awards programs was founded in 1987 and is produced by Ernst & Young and sponsored by Citigroup Private Bank, Hale and Dorr LLP, J. Robert Scott, Mutli-Media Holdings Inc., and William Gallagher Associates.
IEC Hires V.P. of New Business DevelopmentNEWARK, N.Y. IEC Electronics Corp., a contract electronics manufacturer (CEM) using both surface mount and through-hole technology, announced Randall C. Lainhart has joined the company as vice president of New Business Development. Lainhart brings more than 15 years of EMS business development experience to IEC and previously held the position of vice president of sales and marketing at N.Y.-based Matco Electronics.
IEC's President and CEO Thomas Lovelock said, "I am pleased to announce the addition of Randy Lainhart to our management team at IEC. He brings a proven track record of business development that we believe will broaden IEC's customer base."
Tecnomatix and SCI PartnerNASHUA, N.H. Tecnomatix Technologies, provider of manufacturing process management software solutions, announced a technology partnership with SCI Systems Inc., provider of manufacturing and supply chain services.
Under the agreement, Tecnomatix eMPower Test Expert will become SCI's standard test tool. The eMPower Test Expert will enable SCI to establish data requirement standards for customers running testing programs.
Customers traditionally have had to use several separate software tools to accomplish what eMPower Test Expert does in a single program. Additionally, customers can now transfer jobs between manufacturing plants and be up running in a matter of hours.
"Tecnomatix is very pleased with our continued worldwide partnership with leading service provider SCI," said Harel Beit-on, president and CEO of Tecnomatix Technologies. "SCI's selection of Test Expert round out the company's use of Tecnomatix eMPower solutions to include assembly, documentation and testing, and we look forward to continuing our work with SCI to ensure that it maintains and grows its lead as a cutting edge technology innovator."
Services Contract Awarded to Group TechnologiesTAMPA, Fla. Group Technologies Corp. (GroupTech) a subsidiary of Sypris Solutions Inc., was awarded a General Services Administration (GSA) Federal Supply Schedule contract for Professional Engineering Services (PES). GroupTech will be allowed to offer world-class electrical and mechanical systems, and software engineering as well as management and logistics services to federal government agencies because of this GSA schedule contract. Contract duration is five years, with a five-year option.
Under the PES Schedule, GroupTech will provide specialized engineering expertise in six service categories: Strategic Planning for Technology Programs/Activities; Concept Development and Requirements Analysis; System Design, Engineering and Integration; Test and Evaluation; Integrated Logistics Support; and Acquisition and Life Cycle Management.
"We are very pleased to be able to offer our engineering services through the GSA schedule," said James G. Cooke, president and CEO. "Using the schedule offers agencies a streamlined and cost effective way to obtain GroupTech's services at guaranteed and highly competitive rates. Dense-Pac Microsystems Changes NameGARDEN GROVE, Calif. Dense Pac Microsystems Inc.'s shareholders and board of directors have approved a name change to DPAC Technologies Corp. to reflect the continued growth of the company and diversity of its business.
Ted Bruce, president and CEO, said, "Our name change aptly reflects how DPAC Technologies approaches its mission: to provide products and services for the Integration Age. As our business has grown and diversified over the last two years, we've given considerable thought to a new name that better represents our corporate values and goals, one that signifies a forward looking approach throughout our organization."

Sanmina and SCI Systems MergeSAN JOSE, Calif. Sanmina Corp. and SCI Systems Inc., two leading electronics manufacturing services (EMS) providers, entered in a merger in which each share of SCI common stock will be converted into 1.36 shares of Sanmina common stock.
The transaction is expected to close in Sanmina's fiscal fourth quarter or at the beginning of its fiscal quarter of 2002. The merger of Sanmina and SCI creates the world's first premier EMS company with approximately 100 global manufacturing facilities in more than 20 countries. Other benefits from this merger include enhanced global order fulfillment capabilities, diversified customer base in high-growth sectors, increased scale and capabilities, and financial strength to lead industry consolidation.
"The merger of our two companies accelerates our goal of building the premier EMS company in the world," said Sanmina's Chairman and CEO Jure Sola. "In today's rapidly changing and increasingly competitive global market, you have to be a true business partner, one who can work closely with each customer, react quickly and add value at every step. We believe the combined company, with its increased ability to provide a total end-to-end solution in all the major technology centers in the world, will successfully meet this challenge and become the preferred partner of the leading OEMs in our target sectors."

In other news, Sanmina Corp. closed an Austin-based printed circuit board (PCB) fabrication plant due to weak demand. Members of production will be moved to other U.S.-based sites, according to Carmine Renzulli, the company's human resource vice president.
