SMTA International 2001 Show Guide Show Preview
Get Connected at SMTA International, the industry's best technical conference on electronics assembly and advanced packaging. This year's event is being held September 30 through October 4, 2001, at the Donald Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill., in conjunction with the Assembly Tech Expo (ATExpo). SMTA International will feature the most current and comprehensive information on SMT, optoelectronics, bluetooth, flip chip, MEMS, chip scale, ball grid array, automotive and more, while ATExpo will feature more than 700 exhibitors, many of whom will launch new products.
The combination of SMTA International and ATExpo will provide participants ample opportunity to gain new skills and update technical knowledge. SMTA International was organized by the world's leading users group for surface mount and companion technology. This year's program will consist of 35 courses, 17 of which are new, symposiums, free daily events on 0201 placement, standard advanced packaging and electronics manufacturing services (EMS), as well as more than 120 papers presented by leading researchers and companies. The show floor will be open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. October 2 - 3, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on October 4.
Conference OverviewThe comprehensive SMTA International conference offers tutorials, technical sessions, symposiums and workshops, allowing attendees to choose based on individual needs.
TutorialsThese full day (7 hour) or half-day (3.5 hour) educational programs are led by industry professionals with extensive experience in the subject area of the course. Course leaders deliver focused, in-depth presentations on topics of current importance to the industry, based on their research and industry experience. Tutorials are application-oriented and structured to combine field experience with scientific research to solve everyday problems.
Featured Sunday and Monday tutorials include topics on manufacturing and assembly, advanced packaging, soldering, process control, and contract manufacturing (CM). Thursday's fare will cover process control, substrates and cm.
Technical SessionsThese 1.5 hour programs present three technical papers under the direction of a chairman. Each author discusses a topic related to the main subject of the session, followed by audience questions. The objective of a technical session is to bring new scientific and technical developments to light. Emphasis is placed on original, previously unpublished papers.
Available Tuesday and Wednesday, topics include manufacturing and assembly, advanced packaging, substrates, process control, and failure analysis.
SymposiumsThese in-depth daylong events offer four 1.5 hour sessions featuring a variety of industry experts speaking or serving as panelists on the following topics:
Monday CM; successful outsourcing management; EMS company's role in R&D assembly; and technologies panel discussion: supply chain management logistics and support.
Thursday lead-free soldering technology; reliability of lead-free solder joints; lead-free soldering: reliability studies for real-world applications; lead-free soldering: surface finishes through assembly; and processing.
WorkshopsThese half-day (3.5 hour) courses, taught by industry experts currently working on the specific topic, present current information and review existing theory and practice. Workshops are applications-oriented and serve as both a primer for those new to a technology and as a refresher course for those who need to review and update their knowledge.
Special EventsSpecial Events abound at this year's conference:
The Emerging Technologies Summit, offered Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., offers the opportunity to "think out of the box" about the next big breakthrough in technology that may be at hand. Past events included the replacement of vacuum tubes with transistors, followed by the solid-state transistor that lead to the integrated circuit, propelling us into the Digital Age. Will the next big event be in biotech, MEMS or MOEMS or perhaps an as yet undeveloped technology? Speakers and audience members will speculate in this session in which science and technology converge.
The SMTA Annual Meeting will be held Tuesday, from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Keynote speaker, Koichi Nishimura, Ph.D., is CEO, president and chairman of the board of Solectron Corp. The title of his address will be "The True Value of EMS Is in the Service," and during his presentation he will share with the audience his belief that there is a need for an EMS company to provide true supply chain facilitation through offering a full range of services to all types of customers.
The free Networking Reception on Tuesday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. offers the chance to relax, unwind, exchange information or just enjoy meeting colleagues from all over the world.
