Solectron Acquires Wireless Company
December 31, 1969 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
MILPITAS, Calif. - Solectron Corp. announced the signing of a letter of intent for the acquisition of AMERICOM Wireless Services, a privately held corporation specializing in wireless handset repair and refurbishment as well as outsourced technical customer support services. As part of the transaction, Solectron will gain specialized repair and testing equipment, and assume responsibility for AMERICOM`s business operations in Los Angeles; Louisville, Ky.; Baltimore; and Dallas.
"With this acquisition, Solectron establishes a focus on the wireless industry to provide a complete range of integrated service offerings to our customers in this strategic market," said William E. Mitchell, president of Solectron`s global services business unit. "Our service vision is to provide our customers with the highest quality, cost-competitive, integrated service solutions through the most complete global footprint in the industry."
Solectron intends to offer employment to approximately 1,000 AMERICOM team members. The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of May 2000.
"AMERICOM has built a very solid foundation by creating outsourcing solutions for the wireless industry," said Don McClure, AMERICOM`s chairman and co-CEO. "As we expand our horizons globally and look to provide end-to-end support to both wireless carriers and OEMs, it becomes extremely powerful to marry AMERICOM`s core competencies with the proven global capabilities of ... Solectron."
In other company news, Solectron completed the acquisition of the complex systems manufacturing assets of Ericsson`s telecommunications infrastructure equipment operations in Longuenesse, France, and Ostersund, Sweden. As part of the agreement, Solectron will provide a complete range of integrated supply chain solutions to Ericsson, including supply-base management, early prototyping, new product introduction (NPI) management, PCB assembly, configure-to-order and build-to-order complex systems assembly, and global services.
