Precision Soldering: New Rework and Selective Soldering Options
June 18, 2010 |Estimated reading time: 4 minutes
-- Malcom Company introduced hot air tools; VJ Technologies debuted an IR preheater series; Seho added process controls as well as a training program; Etek began carrying Purex fume extraction items; and RPS Automation brought fiducial inspection and auto correction to its selective soldering products.Hot Air Process Heaters
Leister Process Heating Tools can be integrated into any process to provide electronically controlled heat from ambient to 1,600°F with ±1° accuracy and infinitely adjustable airflow from 3 to 300 CFM. Designed to precisely and uniformly focus heat, using one or more hot air tools and the appropriate nozzles, these process heaters are a suitable replacement for less precise open flames and induction, convection, and infrared heaters. Consisting of blowers, heaters, and controllers with specific directional capabilities, Leister Process Heating Tools can be configured as turnkey systems to meet a wide range of application requirements. Directional hot air applications include curing, de-flashing, drying, finishing, laminating, packaging, shrinking, sterilizing, soldering, welding, and more. IR Preheaters with Advanced Control
IR Pre-heater Series are designed to preheat assemblies that require additional heat to compliment manual soldering and desoldering of SMT, through-hole and other thermal applications. Infrared preheaters provide the additional heat and control required for lead-free applications, especially for multi-layer circuits. The preheaters occupy minimal bench space and are ready for use. The total heated area is segmented into four selectable zones, efficiently directing energy at specific sized boards. The IR Pre-heater Series is designed to work in conjunction with hand soldering and desoldering tools. IR Pre-heaters were developed for manual rework or for use with equipment, such as selective soldering systems, for preheating boards to help eliminate board warping. The pre heaters also compliment underpowered rework systems lacking effective bottom heating. IR Pre-heaters feature robust, flexible board fixtures that are reportedly easy to adjust. Spring-loaded board clips allow thermal expansion without bending boards. Many PCB tooling options are available, including four-sided board support, bottom board support, and extended reach board clips to accommodate odd-shaped boards. VJ Technologies Inc., www.vjt.com
Maximum Process Control for Selective Soldering
Control of automatic selective soldering processes is achieved with flux control, which measures the actual flux quantity jetted by the drop jet nozzle during the process. Drop jet fluxers guarantee exact flux application to the point with a precisely defined quantity, thus ensuring that surrounding areas will not be wetted. Enough flux must get to the solder joint so that a sufficient hole fill is achieved to form high-quality solder joints. Traditional flux control systems only control the function of the drop jet nozzle. This usually is performed in a test cycle prior to the actual flux application to the PCB. The new flux control system from Seho monitors the function of the drop jet nozzle and measures the actual flux quantity jetted by the drop jet nozzle during the fluxing process. The measured quantity is compared with a reference value to catch deviations and on which part of the PCB. SEHO Systems GmbH, www.sehona.com
Reflow, Selective, and Wave Solder Training
SEHO Academy was developed to help companies to train employees in the professional operation of soldering systems. Trainees can select one or several training blocks from the existing courses to best suit their individual needs. The seminars are subdivided into three categories: reflow, selective, and wave. Each category offers both basic training courses on maintenance of soldering systems as well as optimization of processes and workflow. The efficiency of SEHO’s training courses is based on a simple principle: to provide theory and practice in a balanced proportion. The training courses can take place either at the customer’s site or at SEHO in Kreuzwertheim, Germany. The training courses at SEHO’s headquarters provide attendees with the modern seminar and demonstration facilities as well as the various soldering machines that are available for the practical part of the training courses. Also, attendees are welcome to bring their “problem assemblies” to discuss possible solutions with SEHO’s process specialists during the seminar. Continuous improvement and instructor training result in new training blocks, such as refreshment and update courses, as well as two-day training sessions during which attendees are coached on-site with their machines. The SEHO Academy also plans to provide training for other target groups, e.g. line executives. SEHO Systems GmbH, www.seho.de
Fume Extraction Systems
Purex Fumecube, Arm Extraction for 2 Users, has filters available for solder or chemical fumes. It is supplied with two 38mm stainless steel arms with pen nib nozzles that can be simply attached to the workbench by using a versatile clamp bracket. If the work area moves, the Fume-Cube can be relocated in minutes.Fume Extraction Systems Purex 400, Digital Control System, is a dedicated control, monitoring and display system unique to Purex fume extractors. All functions are fully automatic, all the user has to do is set the appropriate airflow on installation. Etek Europe, sales@etek-europe.com
3D Fiducial Vision Inspection
RPS Vision Correct is an integrated fiducial inspection and auto correction product for use with all RPS selective soldering systems. RPS Fiducial Correct uses stored images to validate known fiducial points and other indicators. The soldering process will stop if fiducial patterns are not found. Fiducial Correct will also identify position errors of detected fiducials and use correction algorithms to adjust the soldering program by the X and Y axes deltas. Key features of RPS Fiducial Correct include: High Def Video Camera and White LED Ring Light, Precision Position Correction ±0.005″/0.127 mm, Sensitivity, Control for Image Recognition and Search Regions, Integration with RPS CamConductor Programming Software, and availability on the Complete Line of RPS Selective Soldering Systems.
