007 Asian Coverage Expands With SMT Merger
July 13, 2010 | I-Connect007Estimated reading time: 2 minutes
For years, I-Connect007 has been covering the electronics manufacturing and assembly market in Asia. With video and written content, in Mandarin and English, I-Connect007 has been there, on the ground in Asia, digging for the next story.
And with the acquisition of SMT Magazine, I-Connect007 has deepened and widened its coverage of the Asian PCB assembly market.
The Asian market demands solid, up-to-date coverage.
Electronics production from the United States and Europe to Asia has, over the years, transformed Asia into the global center for the electronics manufacturing industry. Key factors driving this trend include low labor and manufacturing costs, an extensive electronics supply base and large domestic markets. These continue to be the "pull factors" for global electronics companies to set up shop in Asia.
Asia dominates the global contract electronics manufacturing (CEM) industry. While Asia was initially seen primarily as the manufacturing destination for low-end electronics products, this image is no longer accurate. Apple's iPhone, for instance, is manufactured by Taiwan-based Foxconn Electronics-the world's biggest electronics manufacturing services (EMS) provider. HP and Dell personal computers are manufactured by Asian EMS companies as well. Another example is the Android smart phone, which is being manufactured by HTC.
India, for its part, has its share of a significant influx in OEM (original equipment makers) and EMS companies. Today, most of the global leaders in the EMS segment have a presence in the country, according to market research firm Frost & Sullivan. Telecom and automotive are the most prominent industries in India; this expected to continue in the coming years.
Asia's OEM industry is one of the region's leading electronics segment. In the PC market alone, Q1 2010 results from iSuppli show that Asian OEMs ASUSTeK Computer Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd, Lenovo Group Ltd, and Acer Inc. posted the strongest year-over-year growth among the top 10 OEMs worldwide. Acer in fact overtook Dell to be the second biggest PC maker globally. Apart from the CEM industry, the region has a huge electronics assembly, packaging, and testing industry, particularly in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
Overall, Asia will continue to increase its share in global electronics production. From the manufacture of consumer electronics devices such as notebook PCs, smart phones, mobile phones, netbooks and e-readers, to telecom and networking equipment such as base stations, routers and switches, and even the development of electronic systems for the automotive industry--Asia is at every step of the value chain. And this trend has also driven the growth of the region's SMT industry. In particular, the SMT equipment market is witnessing steady growth propelled by demand from various end-user sectors such as communications, consumer electronics, industrial electronics, automotive, and medical sectors.
The SMT merger will give readers access to more information about the Asian market than ever. SMT China and SMT Korea will join the 007 Mandarin publications, PCB007 China, EMS007 China and PCBDesign007China. And I-Connect007 will continue to bring you the latest from trade shown in Asia, including CPCA, Nepcon China, Semicon China and TPCA.
It's an exciting time for the Asian electronics assembly community - and anyone whose job depends upon understanding it. Stay tuned to I-Connect007 and SMT and get the information you need, right away.
