Construction of the 132,400 sq.ft. (12,300 sq.meters) facility, which began last October, is now complete. Kimball Electronics Group (KEG) is a global contract electronics manufacturing services (EMS) company that specializes in durable electronics. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
"We are excited to move into our new facility and we have already installed a new state-of-the-art surface mount technology printed circuit board assembly line," stated Roger Chang, Vice President, Asian Operations. The Nanjing facility is a state of the art electronics manufacturing facility, which will complement Kimball Electronics' existing global footprint of operations and build products supporting the industrial, medical and automotive marketplace. The Nanjing facility will provide printed circuit board assembly, system subassembly, and final product assembly to KEG customers. In addition to the manufacturing of electronic assemblies, the Nanjing site will also provide engineering services along with supply chain support for all KEG facilities.
"We are very excited to have our China facility operational and have the ability to support the requests from our customers for China production," stated Don Charron, President of Kimball Electronics Group. "The engineering and manufacturing expertise of the Nanjing facility will enable us to better serve our growing base of customers."
Kimball began hiring the management team for its China operation last year and currently has 48 employees. "We have hired a talented staff of employees that have formed a strong nucleus that we believe will provide a very effective ramp-up of production," said Charron. "We are in the final planning stages for two different programs with existing automotive and industrial customers that are committed to our China operation." Initial production in the facility is expected to begin later this year.
Jim Thyen, President and Chief Executive Officer, Kimball International, stated, "The expansion of our electronics global footprint is in keeping with our promise to be where our customers need us to be. Several of our customers have growth plans in China and we hope to help build their success."
Kimball made the decision to develop the China operation to strengthen its global responsiveness to customers and to add manufacturing capabilities for the automotive and industrial equipment industries. Nanjing, a city of over 6.4 million people, is located near the Yangtze River at the intersection of the Coastal and Riverside economic belts, and is the capital of the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu. The location of this operation takes advantage of a highly qualified workforce, well established logistics for export products, and close proximity to the industries served.
