BEST HeatShieldGel Protects Electronic Components from Heat Safely

Reading time ( words)

BEST Inc., a leader in the development of PCB rework tools, announces the release of HeatShieldGel, a water-based gel that protects components from heat. This revolutionary product, made from a water-based gel, easily goes on to parts neighboring the device to be reworked or on heat-sensitive devices such as ceramic capacitors that will be subject to reflow. After the rework or reflow process has been completed, the gel can be simply cleaned off with water. It is highly flexible in that it can be used on boards with tightly-spaced components without having to do any cutting or modification of shielding tape or materials.

The HeatShieldGel is effective and does not impact the reliability of the PCB. It is more effective than Kapton tape by a factor of 4X! It has shown to be innocuous to the PCB through thorough ionic cleanliness testing assuring you that when cleaned up properly the reliability of the board will not be impacted by using this product. The material is a single use water soluble clay-based, environmentally-safe formulation. It is non-flammable, non-toxic and does not have any corrosive properties.

One of the other beneficial attributes of this material is its flexibility and ease of use. Simply scoop out some of the gel material from the container. Apply it liberally to the parts requiring protection in the vicinity (not on the part being reflowed or it will not go in to reflow) Perform your rework or assembly operation. Clean the gel and surrounding area using DI water and a soft brush or run it through your wash machine cycle using a water only cleaning process. The gel is water soluble and harmlessto PCBs as long as it is washed off.

Dan Patten from BEST Inc. reported “We are excited about being able to bring such a dramatically effective product to market. Most clients, upon seeing it being used don’t believe how effective it is!”

The HeatShieldGel comes in 3 oz plastic sealed screw top jar and retails for less than $30.

Failures and Reliability in Soldering

07/09/2019 | Michael Gouldsmith and Zen Lee, Thermaltronics
The definition of failure is "the lack of success in doing or achieving something, especially in relation to a particular activity." If the activity is concerning a soldering process, such a failure can have a downstream impact far beyond the actual solder joint. In this regard, it is first necessary to understand what constitutes a good solder joint because appearance is too often deemed a success.
