Taiwan PCB, SMT Industries Focus on IC Substrate Manufacturing
October 18, 2006 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
Day 1 at TPCA Show 2006<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
October 18, <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Taipei--With the theme "Challenge for Co-Competition," the Taiwan Printed Circuit Association (TPCA) Show 2006 and the EA Expo Taiwan kicked off strongly today at the Taipei World Trade Center, Taiwan. The show, which is already in its seventh year, will run until Friday, October 20. According to TPCA Chairman T.J. Tseng, the TPCA Show 2006 has reached a record high 1,302 booths sold representing 289 exhibitors.
In his opening speech, he mentioned that Taiwan's printed circuit board (PCB) industry has had its highs and lows, particularly with rising oil prices, increasing energy requirements and raw material costs. However, despite those problems, the island's PCB sales continue to be strong--of mainland China's total turnover for this year, Taiwan-invested PCB makers in the region comprise 35 percent. On the other hand, Chairman Tseng said that Taiwan makers should continue to invest in production facilities, and focus on cost reduction, quality assurance, and R&D of cutting-edge technology to meet the dynamic, fast-paced demand for PCBs.
Taiwan ranks second worldwide in IC substrate production fueled by the high-technology semiconductor industry on the island. Focusing on the IC packaging industry this year, the TPCA Show, in collaboration with the Surface-mount Technology Association, will be holding an IC Packaging show, which aims to "enhance the cooperation between the printed circuit board (PCB) and the surface-mount technology (SMT) industries."
Buyer turnout is also strong for the first day; according to some exhibitors located even in the farthest corners of the complex, they have been getting a lot of inquiries, and people do flock their booths. The venue has been divided into zones highlighting PCB manufacturing, PCB base materials and chemicals, processing and testing equipment for PCBs, electronics assembly and related equipment and materials, and relevant materials and equipment for IC substrate manufacturing.
