SMTA Reaching Out to Locals and Students
September 6, 2016 | Patty Goldman, I-Connect007Estimated reading time: 7 minutes
Martin: Yes. Currently we have 51 official chapters all over the world with eight of them being international. That's exciting. It's nice to go and connect in different parts of the world. I think it's so great to be able to go to all these different cities, but yet see the common connection of education, networking, and advancing the manufacturing industry. And the best part is that it brings people together. They're all friends or end up becoming friends. That's the serendipitous benefit of the SMTA. As a member, you're always welcome to call up different members or officers in other chapters for assistance or advice; that's what this is all about.
Goldman: You've got that connection with other people, so if you have a problem, you've got people to go to. You've met them, you've shaken hands, you ate lunch together, had a discussion.
Martin: That's one of the reasons why they're a part of the organization, is to meet other people, to help other people. You don't have to operate in a vacuum. Please reach out. We want to help.
Goldman: So, there is a company membership and an individual membership? Is that how it works?
Martin: Yes. I think IPC is all corporate memberships. SMTA has a Global membership for companies that have multiple locations around the world. We also have a Corporate membership that is applicable for all companies. We also offer individual memberships and significantly reduced membership fees for students and retirees. You don't necessarily have to have the company affiliation to do it. If your company is not involved at that level, you can just join for $75, and get all the benefits and discounts.
Goldman: Access to all the articles, and everything else.
Martin: Yes, exactly, the technical papers; any paper that's ever been published or presented at an SMTA event. Your membership would give you free access to every full technical paper.
Goldman: Tanya, it’s been so very nice to talk with you today. I know you’re busy so I won’t keep you any longer. Thank you.

The event was the brainchild of Tara Dunn, SMTA director of training and education. It included a compelling and collaborative presentation by David Haboud of Altium, John Johnson of American Standards Circuits, and Chrys Shea of Shea Engineering, who had spent the past several weeks creating and building an appropriate SMT test board vehicle for UHDI, something that was passed around for all conference goers to see and touch.
