Peters' ELPEGUARD UTC 1507 FLZ Earns UL Approval
December 10, 2021 | PetersEstimated reading time: 2 minutes
The Peters conformal coating ELPEGUARD UTC 1507 FLZ has received UL approval. UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories, the globally recognised US organisation that tests and certifies products, components and systems with regard to their safety. In the case of the ELPEGUARD® UTC 1507 FLZ conformal coating, it is a matter of fire protection testing. The product now classified by UL as "Permanent Coating UL94" is rated "non-flammable" at V0 level.
"This is the best flame level for conformal coatings," says Stefan Schröder, product manager in charge of conformal coatings at Peters. "V" stands for "vertical" - in other words, the ELPEGUARD® conformal coating does not ignite even when the flame is directed vertically at the product - here the heat effect is most intense. Issued by an independent organisation, this certificate is a special quality feature for the customer.
The UL-certified product ELPEGUARD® UTC 1507 FLZ offers a low-priced alternative to common silicone conformal coatings available on world markets. "This ink is capable of replacing silicones. While offering the same advantages, is has a significantly lower film thickness and is therefore more versatile," says Stefan Schröder. The graduate engineer also refers to the new resin Peters formulates in ELPEGUARD® UTC 1507 FLZ: The Synthetic Rubber seal guarantees permanent elasticity, which is required for certain applications in an industrial context.
What exactly is behind Peters’ product name ELPEGUARD® UTC 1507 FLZ ? The flex-based conformal coating is used for the coating of electronic assemblies. It is characterised by a very good crack resistance, a feature proven within thermal shock tests from -65 to +150° Celsius. This ink system is also recommendable for its high insulation resistance, even at extreme temperatures and high humidity.
Similar to silicone conformal coatings
ELPEGUARD® UTC 1507 FLZ is available in three variants. "The difference lies in the viscosity i.e. the flow properties", reports Stefan Schröder. At the world-leading Productronica trade fair recently held in Munich, Peters highlighted the four top features of their premium product range: flexible against cold, resistant against thermal shock, insulating against moisture, protective against corrosive gases. "Particularly with regard to moisture insulation, this coating is similar to silicones," emphasises Stefan Schröder.
Conclusion: Those who choose the ELPEGUARD® conformal coating UTC 1507 FLZ from Peters can rely on a quality that is similar to that of silicone coatings - and save money. The strength of this cold-flexible conformal coating lies in its high permanent elasticity. In addition, the operational safety of the electronics is guaranteed by the recent UL test mark "Permanent Coating UL94" at V0 level.
