Conformal Coating New Products
October 19, 2009 |Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
— New products for electronics coating and encapsulation include halogen-free coatings and adhesives from DYMAX; an IR epoxy cure system from IRphotonics; a tack-free, low-hardness conformal coating from Master Bond; acrylic- and epoxy-based systems from Rudolph Bros.; and a UV/visible-light-curable silicone potting and sealing material from DYMAX.
Halogen-free UV Conformal Coatings and Adhesives UV conformal coatings, encapsulants, adhesives, and potting materials for electronic applications are documented by an independent laboratory to meet or exceed the halogen-free standards set forth in IEC 61249-2-21. Halogen-free declarations give users up-front confidence that materials will meet back-end requirements. Halogen-free test reports are available online at www.dymax.com for reference by users. The existing formulas were not altered to meet halogen-free requirements. DYMAX Corporation, www.dymax.com.
Thermal Spot Curing System The iCure infrared (IR) spot curing system reduces cure times by 10×. One product evaluation performed by a medical device manufacturer, using electrically conductive adhesive, went from the adhesive manufacturer’s recommended cure schedule of 120°C for 15 minutes to a 1 minute cure using the iCure AS200 thermal spot curing system. Another product evaluation was conducted with a high-temperature adhesive for sealing electromechanical sub components. The adhesive manufacturer’s recommended cure schedule of 120°C for 10 minutes using a thermal oven was reduced to 20 seconds with the iCure AS200 thermal spot curing system. The iCure AS200 is an in-line fiber optic system that provides heat by IR radiation in a portable unit, delivering pinpoint and accurate control for temperature-sensitive substrates and complex devices. Using infrared light to generate heat, the iCure thermal spot curing system aids automated manufacturing processes requiring rapid adhesive curing and localized heating of bonded assemblies. The iCure AS200 provides a 200 W lamp with up to 90 W/cm2; up to 10× decrease in thermal epoxy curing times; and batch processes can be fully automated by attaching the flexible light guide to a robotic arm. The system suits complex devices where localized curing must be achieved without heating adjacent components. Applications include spot curing of thermal epoxies, bonding and fixing of plastic and glass components, temporary fixing of miniature components, precision assembly and bonding of semiconductor components, focused energy for micro soldering, and localized heat welding of thermoplastics. PCB Conformal CoatingMaster Sil 773 is a rapid cure to tack-free, ready-to-use silicone conformal coating for printed circuit boards (PCBs). It is formulated to protect electronic circuitry in high humidity environments as well as upon exposure to shock and vibration. It cures quickly at ambient temperatures to a highly flexible, transparent, low-hardness silicone coating. Adhesion to critical board components is strong. The product maintains its low modulus over a -85° to +390°F range. Master Bond, http://www.masterbond.com/produse/produse_cc.html.
UV Light Cure The Cyberbond UV Light Cure technologies are acrylic- and epoxy-based systems with a full range of viscosities and cure times. These adhesives and sealing materials suit medical device, electronic, and general assembly applications. Cyberbond UV cure systems are “Cure on Demand” adhesives and sealants. UV-cure Silicone DYMAX Cure-Point 9440-A/B cures to depth in seconds upon exposure to UV/visible light to provide protection to electronic components and circuitry. It is a UV/visible-light-curable silicone potting and sealing material designed for applications where fast cure, enhanced thermal performance, and room-temperature shadowed-area cure are required. Cure-Point 9440-A/B has a >90 day room temperature mix life. The product is designed to withstand long exposure to temperatures ranging from -40° to +200°C while retaining fast-cure processing benefits associated with UV-curable materials. It targets applications where RTV silicones and heat-cure silicones are not ideal due to longer cure times or elevated-temperature cure. It can be used where oil or chemical exposure are present. It also features a fast, tack-free cure with negligible shrinkage. The material is solvent free and in full compliance with the RoHS Directives 2002/95/EC and 2003/11EC. DYMAX, www.dymax.com.
