IPC Midwest: A-Line Live Assembly
August 31, 2009 |Estimated reading time: 4 minutes
SCHAUMBURG, IL For the second year in a row, IPC Association Connecting Electronics Industries will run an SMT assembly line at IPC Midwest, September 2324 in Schaumburg. Follow a product from screen printing to component mounting (through hole and surface mount), and then through reflow, learning about the processes, equipment (and end-item cleaning) that were used to manufacture the assembly from experts on the tools.
At the end of the line, visitors can take away a finished assembly, thanks to the participating companies: Ace Production Technologies, ASYS Automation, Aqueous Technologies, Bare Board Group, Capital Equipment Exchange Company, Freedom CAD Services Inc., Fuji America Corporation, Kyzen Corporation, MicroScreen LLC, The Morey Corporation, PROMATION Inc., and Qualitek International Inc.
This year's A-Line will have an additional process: assembly cleaning. "Aqueous Technologies is proud that visitors will see real machines in action, as they would be at their facility, rather than simply obtaining brochures or staring at static equipment," said Mike Konrad, president of Aqueous Technologies. The company's Trident machine on the A-Line has a defluxing process of up to five cycles including prewash, wash, rinse, cleanliness testing, and drying. Kyzen's AQUANOX A4241 will be on display in the A-Line, an aqueous cleaning solution designed with an inhibition technology to be effective on tough soils while protecting sensitive parts from etch or darkening. "We are excited to have our award winning AQUANOX A4241 running live in the IPC Midwest A-Line," said Tom Forsythe, VP of Kyzen.
The full line includes:Ace Production Technologies' KISS-104 fully automated selective soldering machine. KISS-104 is used to flux and solder through hole components on SMT boards within close proximity of adjacent components. KISS-104 maintains the PCB stationary during the soldering process preventing components from toppling over causing "unset" inter-metallic fillets and overcomes the limitations of operator dependent soldering with a flexible automated flux application and molten solder delivery system.
ASYS Inc.'s BLS 01 laser marking system. The in-line laser marking system BLS 01 is designed to mark codes, images and clear text into solder resist. The laser and the galvo head are mounted above a conveyor on an X/Y-gantry. The PCB is clamped and secured while the laser is moved to the pre-programmed XY positions and the contents are marked.
Aqueous Technologies' Trident III automatic defluxing and cleanliness testing system Trident III is capable of removing all flux residues including rosin, no-clean and water soluble. Both leaded and lead-free flux residues may be removed using the system, and it is equipped with an automatic chemical injection system that automatically adds a programmable volume of defluxing chemical to the wash water.
Bare Board Group's printed circuit boards (PCBs). An award winning, nationally recognized PCB distributor, BBG provides quality high-mix, low-to-medium volume production printed circuit boards from Taiwan.
Capital Equipment Exchange Company (CEE) will bring a Speedline MPM AP Excel screen printer. This previously owned Speedline MPM AP Excel Screen Printer in the IPC production A-Line will demonstrate machine quality in a lower cost bracket.
Fuji America Corporation's XPF-W pick & place system. This small footprint machine can assemble PCBs up to 20" × 27" using Dynamic Head Exchange, which allows the machine to switch from a high-speed chip shooter to a flexible placement machine in 0.3 to 0.8 seconds. The 5'-wide base can hold up to 128 feeder inputs and place components ranging from 01005 to 68 mm2.
Kyzen Corporation's AQUANOX A4241 aqueous cleaning solution. AQUANOX A4241 is a new aqueous cleaning solution that can be used in a multi-process environment and will provide brilliant solder joints with no sump side additives and consistent cleaning results with minimal bath monitoring.
Microscreen stencils for solder paste deposition. MicroScreen LLC offers laser-cut and electroformed stencils for solder paste deposition. Options for lead-free stencils include high-nickel metal and "green" identification. All stencils are 100% inspected using ScanCheck AOI. Microscreen is a distributor of Wizard and Space Saver frame systems. Products include thick film screens as well as printing screens for solar cell, membrane switch, flex circuitry and other large frame requirements.
The Morey Corporation's electronics manufacturing services. For more than seven decades, Morey has been a leader in advanced, reliable hardened electronics and at the forefront of innovation in electronic product development and manufacturing for the telematics, display and controller markets. The company has long-term manufacturing relationships with top-tier industry leaders in commercial transportation, aeronautical, agriculture, construction, military, and other heavy equipment industries.
PROMATION Inc.'s conveyors. PROMATION specializes in PCB and pallet handling equipment, robotic soldering systems, automated label placement solutions, and other complimentary custom automation.
Qualitek International Inc.'s solder paste and flux. Qualitek International Inc. is a global provider of soldering solutions. Local technical support and manufacturing headquarters in Addison, IL, as well as abroad. ISO 9001:2008 certified.
