From the Show: Mirtec AOI in the U.S.
September 24, 2008 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
Meredith Courtemanche, managing editor
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. Today at IPC Midwest, we met with Mirtec USA Inc., the U.S. branch of global inspection provider Mirtec Corp. The company celebrated its four-year anniversary in the U.S. this month, and discussed how their customer base in the U.S. has changed in that short time. When Mirtec USA was formed, the company had three systems sold in the country. Today, there are more than 285 operating here. One system, an MV-3L, sold on the show floor at IPC Midwest.
Brian D'Amico, president, cited three factors for success in the U.S. market: quality product that meets inspection needs of domestic assemblers, sales and support provided by the company rather than through distributors, and a strong marketing campaign to promote their capabilities.
From a technology perspective, Mirtec offers a five-camera AOI system as the basis of its product lines. In-line systems are becoming increasingly popular on the U.S. market. These machines have 4-megapixel cameras and a laser measurement system. In the future, D'Amico sees 8-megapixel cameras being implemented on systems, and continued use of laser scanning for difficult inspection like coplanarity and lifted leads. Mirtec USA's parent company is looking at 100% growth this year, and D'Amico U.S. group has seen about 81% growth at midyear. The company operates proprietary offices in China, Korea, Europe, and Slovakia in addition to the U.S.
