Associations in the SMT Industry
December 31, 1969 |Estimated reading time: 5 minutes
There are several associations within SMT meant to offer companies a source of information on industry developments; and to give individuals a networking platform and opportunities to further their education or knowledge in the surface mount manufacturing and assembly market. Below are some industry associations, what they do, and how to contact them. Beyond the basics there are working groups, standards committees, and other organizations within the association. This list will allow you to differentiate between the major industry groups.
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE)The IEEE, a non-profit organization, is a professional association for the advancement of technology. Through its global membership, the IEEE is an authority on areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power, and consumer electronics. The IEEE has more than 370,000 members, including more than 80,000 students, in over 160 countries. There are 1,676 chapters worldwide, and more than 1,526 student branches. IEEE sponsors and co-sponsors more than 450 conferences globally each year. For more information, visit www.ieee.org.
International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI)iNEMI is an industry-led consortium of about 70 electronics manufacturers, suppliers, and related organizations. Its mission is to identify and close technology gaps, which includes the development and integration of the electronics industry supply infrastructure. Accelerated deployment of technology is shaped and led by its members, and the group provides benefits to the global electronics industry. iNEMI roadmaps the needs of the global electronics industry, identifies technology and infrastructure gaps, and helps eliminate those gaps through accelerated deployment of new technologies, development of industry infrastructure, dissemination of efficient business practices, and stimulation of standards. iNEMI also works with government, universities, and other funding agencies to set priorities for future industry needs and R&D initiatives. For more information, visit www.inemi.org.
International Microelectronics and Packaging Society (IMAPS)IMAPS aims to advance and expand the technologies for all levels of electronic and microelectronic packaging through professional and public education, the dissemination of information, and the promotion of the Society's portfolio of technologies. The association disseminates information through advanced technology workshops, technical workshops, symposiums, local chapter meetings, and journals. According to its mission statement, IMAPS will lead the microelectronics packaging, interconnect, and assembly community, providing means of communicating, educating, and interacting at all levels. For more information, visit www.imaps.org.
IPC Association Connecting Electronics IndustriesIPC was founded in 1957 as the Institute for Printed Circuits, later changed its name to the Institute of Interconnecting and Packaging Electronic Circuits, then to IPC in 1999. IPC is a global trade association dedicated to the competitive excellence and financial success of its more than 2,300 member companies. It brings together all industry players, including designers, board manufacturers, assembly companies, suppliers, and OEMs. This U.S.-based trade association is dedicated to furthering the competitive excellence and financial success of its members globally; who are participants in the electronic interconnect industry. IPC devotes resources to management improvement and technology enhancement programs, the creation of relevant standards, protection of the environment, and pertinent government relations. For more information, visit www.ipc.org.
JEDECThe JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, formerly the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council, is the semiconductor engineering standardization body of the Electronics Industries Alliance (EIA), a trade association that represents all areas of the electronics industry. JEDEC was created in 1960 as a joint activity between the EIA and NEMA, to cover the standardization of discrete semiconductor devices, and later expanded to include ICs. JEDEC works through 50 committees/subcommittees that are overseen by the JEDEC Board of Directors. JEDEC offers free distribution of all standards and publications to its member companies. For more information, visit www.jedec.org.
Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA)JEITA promotes healthy manufacturing, international trade and consumption of electronics products and components, to contribute to the overall development of the electronics and information technology (IT) industries furthering Japan's economic development and cultural prosperity. JEITA hosts an annual conference for members that serves as a decision-making forum for the industry. The association is active in developing new fields, promoting international cooperation, working on environmental preservation and safety measures, advancing technical standardization and technological development, implementing surveys and analyzing statistics, reinforcing the industry's operating environment, and maintaining effective public relations and staging exhibitions. For more information, visit www.jeita.or.jp/english.
JISSOJISSO is a term that reflects the total packaging solution for electronic products. The characteristics of the JISSO concepts consider the bare die; its packaging as an off-the-shelf product, or in a module combined with other parts; mounting; and interconnecting on a product substrate that is integrated in the entire system design. There are several levels of JISSO, and several groups that bring together the global views of JISSO standards. The JISSO North American Council (JNAC) is an independent, non-profit organization that monitors and fosters the development of standards using existing standards organizations interested in the total solution for interconnecting, assembling, packaging, mounting, and integrating system design standardization. The JNAC and its members foster open competition in the development of products and services based on industry needs. For more information, visit jisso.ipc.org.
Microelectronics Packaging and Test Engineering Council (MEPTEC)MEPTEC is a trade association of semiconductor suppliers and manufacturers, committed to enhancing the competitiveness of the back-end portion of the semiconductor business. MEPTEC is concerned with assembly and testing, and is dedicated to the advancement of the industry. Developed more than 25 years ago, MEPTEC provides a forum for semiconductor packaging and test professionals to learn and exchange ideas that relate to assembly, test, and handling. For more information, visit www.meptec.org.
Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA)Founded in 1989, the PCMCIA is an international standards body and trade association with more than 100 member companies to establish standards for IC cards, and to promote interoperability among mobile computers where ruggedness, low power, and small size were critical. Today, PCMCIA continues to develop and promote the ExpressCard Standard for hot-swappable systems and modules that improves the I/O performance of desktop and notebook computers by supporting the PCI Express and Universal Serial bus (USB) 2.0 standard.
