ATExpo Brings Industry Together
December 31, 1969 |Estimated reading time: 2 minutes
As I walked the floor at ATExpo on Monday, September 25th at the Donald Stephens Convention Center, I watched forklifts bringing boxes of large capital equipment onto the floor. There was the smell of exhaust fumes and smoke, the beeping of trucks in reverse. It felt like a rock concert about to happen.
OK. Maybe I'm exaggerating a little, but there's something invigorating about the day before a show. The pressure and excitement are building — companies are preparing to display their most recent innovations and successes. I couldn't think of a better time to meet with a dozen or so industry luminaries to "talk shop," and find out what is going on within their companies and associations.
Our annual SMT Editorial Advisory Board meeting on Monday night brought together some of the best and brightest educators the SMT industry has to offer. As we went around the table introducing ourselves, updating each other on what's new, and each sharing a personal detail, I realized I was surrounded by some fascinating people. The session started with Professor Manian S. Ramkumar of Rochester Institute of Technology's Center for Manufacturing and Assembly (RIT CEMA) giving a brief presentation on the upcoming SMT/RIT "Implementing Lead-free: A Hands-on Workshop," to be held October 16-19 in Rochester, N.Y. (To register for this conference, visit our Website, www.smtmag.com.). Ron Lasky, Ph.D., PE, of Indium Corporation and Dartmouth College, then brought up the topic of lead-free and RoHS enforcement — or lack thereof — in the EU. Dennis Derfiny spoke about his current work at Motorola. Gary Tanel explained how he moved from working at Texas Instruments to starting his own business focusing on mergers and acquisitions in the electronics manufacturing arena. Ray Prasad spoke of his work as an educator and lecturer, as well as president of BeamWorks (Beaverton, Ore.). Jennie Hwang, Ph.D. discussed her education and training regimen, and her work with universities.
But maybe it wasn't the electronics background that fascinated me — it was the personal details that really caught my attention. In addition to all the global travel, speaking at and attending conferences and lectures, and working with customers, one of our board members grants wishes for children through the Make A Wish Foundation; another is an avid, long-distance cyclist; others are celebrating the births of new grandchildren; another member handles the transportation logistics for the local school band; another member spoke of becoming a Canadian citizen — "landing;" and yet another member is planning to set up a farm, literally.
I feel privileged to work with such a diverse group of industry professionals — all working toward the goal of bringing our readers the most useful information and articles to help them do their jobs better. I look forward to an exciting and productive 2007.
