Developing ATExpo's EASi Line
December 31, 1969 |Estimated reading time: 2 minutes
Around January each year, Rick James of Electronics Manufacturing Solutions, Inc. starts to think about the assembly line. But he's not thinking of ways to make the line at his Mooresville, Ind.-based contract manufacturing facility leaner, faster, or more productive. He's thinking simple and inexpensive and to September. James coordinates the Electronics Assembly Line (EASi Line), located in the Electronics Assembly Pavilion of the Assembly Technology Expo (ATExpo), September 26-28, 2006, in Rosemont, Ill. In its 11th year, the EASi Line lets attendees experience a fully functional, double-sided SMT manufacturing line in action; and take home a working souvenir. This year, the line will produce a scrolling message board. "We brainstorm; our parameters are that we want something interesting," said James. "A few times, we've done clocks and thermometers, but we've determined over the years that it's good to not have anything that has to be calibrated." It hasn't been determined what the scrolling message will be yet, but Data I/O has offered to bring its ImageWriter programmers to possibly allow attendees to program their messages throughout different areas of the show, adds James.
As vice president of operations for EMS, Inc., James is no stranger to the manufacturing line. The contract manufacturer (CM) focuses on several markets, including consumer, industrial controls, HV/AC, and medical. Prior to establishing the company, James first began putting the line together as an engineer at the U.S. Navy's Electronics Manufacturing Productivity Facility (EMPF) in Indianapolis, Indiana.
This year, the line will incorporate equipment in areas such as material handling and transport, stencil printing, pick-and-place, selective soldering, reflow soldering, X-ray inspection, robotic point-to-point soldering, rework, depaneling, packaging, laser marking, microcontroller programming, and other technologies. The line generally produces about 3,000 products during the three-day show. Visit www.atexpo.com for show information. Companies participating on this year's EASi Line include:
