ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Center for Electronics Manufacturing and Assembly (CEMA) at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is an academic research lab offering the Electronics Packaging industry research services, failure analysis, process training and development, consulting, and laboratory rental. CEMA provides the industry with relevant services, applied research, in-house benchmarking studies, and technology training in several SMT and packaging sectors. In collaboration with the industry, CEMA provides:
Process training - Provides in-house training and development in all aspects of electronics packaging, from degree programs to customized seminars, in-field training, and distance learning.
Prototype assembly - CEMA features state-of-the-art facilities for producing prototype assemblies and providing board design, manufacturing, inspection, testing, and rework services.
Analytical services - The center offers analytical know-how and equipment such as cross-sectioning, X-ray, acoustic microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, shear testing, shock testing, and temperature/humidity testing.
Process Development - CEMA can help develop and optimize assembly processes for productivity increases, including paste and stencil evaluation, print parameters, dispensing, and oven profiling.
Materials Evaluation - Applied research and evaluation of materials, including substrates, solder pastes, adhesives, underfills, and conductive epoxies is available.
CEMA has also compiled the “Lead-free Research Compendium,” a condensed digest of research papers and articles covering all aspects of the transition to lead-free. The compendium gives companies a tool to educate employees on lead-free technology and can help in lead-free implementations, especially for companies involved in circuit board assembly. Prototype houses also may benefit. The compendium is available on CD or in hard copy. To order a copy, visit http://www.rit.edu/~smt/leadfreeform.php3, or call (585) 475-6934.
