With Deadline Two Years Away, Soldertec Global Offers Lead-free Services
July 27, 2004 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
UK — Soldertec Global has established regional guidance recommending timescales for European components manufacturers and electronic assemblers to develop products that will comply with imminent European legislation.
July 2004 is an important milestone in the electronics industry, signifying that there are only two years remaining until the EU RoHS Directive comes into effect. The Directive requires the phase out of hazardous substances, such as lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium and certain brominated flame retardants, in electrical and electronic equipment being sold within the EU. The electronics industry should be urgently preparing for this transition to lead-free production. A failure to act now could, for example, lead to excess inventories of components containing lead, resulting in huge costs and losses to the electronics industry.
Soldertec Global also offers its members the following services to assist with the phase in of lead-free production: reliability testing for re-qualification of lead-free assemblies, microscopy and failure analysis, X-ray inspection service, RoHS compliance, mechanical testing, and solderability assessment.
Soldertec Global is a membership-based organization focusing on research into soldering technology, including lead-free issues. It is part of the Materials Division of Tin Technology, a company supported by major tin producers and tin-consuming industries worldwide and is at the cutting edge of research and development into tin-based applications.
