SMTA Medical Electronics Symposium a Success
July 13, 2004 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
Minneapolis — The SMTA Medical Electronics Symposium that took place May 19 through 20, 2004, at the Minneapolis Airport Marriott in Bloomington, Minn., was a new program for SMTA and a great success.
More than 100 attendees enjoyed paper presentations within sessions on Design/Reliability, Manufacturing — Techniques and Requirements, Process and Quality Control, Packaging, Sensors/MEMS, and Business/Regulations.
J. Doug Field of Segway delivered a keynote presentation on "Engineering from the Right Side of the Brain, "and attendees were given the opportunity to try out the Segway self-balancing, electric-powered personal transporter.
Attendee evaluations indicated high levels of satisfaction with the speakers and content, and "Best Paper" awards went to Gareth Hughes of Zyvex Corp. and Nils Heininger of LPKF Laser & Electronics AG for their papers entitled "Precision Assembly Utilizing Microelectromechanical Systems and Nanotechnology: The Enabling of Medical Microsystems" and "Reel-to-Reel Mass Production for Disposable Sensors by Laser Ablation", respectively.
After further review by the SMTA Journal Committee, the following papers appear in the third quarter 2004 issue of the SMTA Journal:
- "Trends in Medical Device Design and Manufacturing" by Phil Salditt, Plexus Technology Group.
- "Implantable Medical Electronics Assembly — Quality and Reliability Considerations" by Peter Borgesen, Universal Instruments Corp., and Eric Cotts, Binghamton University.
- "Impact of Advances in Component Packaging on Medical Devices" by James Marshall, Shane Mooney, Peter Bartlett, Paul Fabre, Bhavik Kant, Megan Wilson and Kenji Kimura, Crystalaid Group of Companies.
- "Improving Manufacturability, Reducing Cost, and Extending Product Life — Processes and Pitfalls Unique to Medical Devices" by Chris Rozewski and Walter Thomson, Plexus Technology Group.
All papers from the event are available on CD in Adobe eBook format for purchase through the SMTA Bookstore at www.smta.org/store/book_detail.cfm?BOOK_ID=196.
Conference chairman Jeff Kennedy of Celestica Inc. has stepped forward again to chair this program for another year, and planning has begun for the SMTA Medical Electronics Symposium in April or May of 2005.
