Kent State Sophomore Honored at YWCA Women of Achievement Award Luncheon
May 11, 2004 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
Cleveland — The YWCA of Greater Cleveland honored Kent State University sophomore Amanda Yoho with the Dr. Jennie S. Hwang Award, an award of $2,000, during its annual YWCA Women of Achievement Awards Luncheon yesterday.
The YWCA of Greater Cleveland established the Dr. Jennie S. Hwang Award to encourage young women to pursue professions in science, engineering and technology. In addition to pursuing a related discipline at a designated university, recipients are judged on their community involvement and academic performance.
Yoho has maintained a 4.0 cumulative grade point average while studying physics and receiving the Bausch & Lomb Science Award. She plans to continue her education and earn a Ph.D. in physics from Kent State University and eventually work in research and design at the NASA Glenn Research Center or for a NASA contractor. Yoho also is active in the community, volunteering with the Multiple Sclerosis Society, serving food to underprivileged families and organizing a local blood drive.
The scholarship was named in honor of Hwang, a scientist, engineer, author, corporate executive and entrepreneur who is internationally distinguished in both business and technology. Dr. Hwang received the YWCA' s Women of Achievement Award in 2000.
The YWCA mission is to empower women and eliminate racism. The association offers domestic violence education and prevention programs, childcare in three locations in Cleveland and East Cleveland, teen parenting programs and programs to help teens make positive life decisions.
