EMS Executive, Industry Analyst and Comedic Scientist Headline IPC Exhibition and Conference

Northbrook, Ill. — IPC — Association Connecting Electronics Industries announces the three keynote speakers for its co-located IPC SMEMA Council's APEX/IPC Printed Circuits Expo/IPC Designers Summit exhibition and conference, taking place February 22 through 26, 2004, at the Anaheim Convention Center, in Anaheim, Calif.
Each keynote address is free to all attendees.
Michael R. Cannon, Solectron Corp.'s president, chief executive officer and board member, will kick-off the first day of the exhibition on Tuesday, February 24, from 8 to 9:15 a.m. PST. In his address, Cannon will share the direction of Solectron and the current environment for the electronics manufacturing services (EMS) industry.Cannon has more than 25 years of manufacturing and technology experience. Prior to joining Solectron, Cannon was president, chief executive officer and a director of Maxtor Corp., a leading global provider of hard-disk drives and storage systems. In Cannon's seven years at Maxtor, he drove a significant increase in the company's revenues, built Maxtor into an industry leader and diversified the company's business through a strategy of internal and acquisition-related growth. Previously, Cannon was with IBM's Storage Systems Division, where he was responsible for the personal storage business unit.
On Wednesday, February 25, from 9 to 10 a.m., renowned electronics industry forecaster Walt Custer, Custer Consulting Group, will present "Business Outlook: Global Electronics Industry." Custer will discuss industry data that points to an industry recovery, analyze the impact of low-cost offshore production and examine the outlook for the printed circuit board and EMS industries.
Winner of the Raymond E. Pritchard IPC Hall of Fame Award in 2001, Custer is a member of the IPC Suppliers Council and the Technology Market Research Council (TMRC) Steering Committee. A former vice president of marketing and sales at Morton Electronic Materials, Custer now analyzes the industry and publishes a daily electronic newsletter.
Finally, on Thursday, February 26, from 2:30 to 4 p.m., Bill Nye — The Science Guy — will round out the three-day exhibition with a discussion on the value and importance of science.
A scientist, comedian, teacher and author, Nye's mission is to teach children the wonders of science. He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell University and later worked as an engineer at The Boeing Co. After years of serving as an engineer by day and a stand-up comic by night, Nye eventually segued into "Bill Nye — The Science Guy" by performing and writing on a late-night comedy show. A guest on the Disney Channel's "Mickey Mouse Club" and the "Late Night with David Letterman," Nye currently acts as head writer of his weekly television series "Disney Presents Bill Nye the Science Guy." He has also written "The Science Guy's Big Blast of Science," an introductory science text, and created several award-winning educational videos and programs for school-age children and adult audiences.
