Speaking of this Week reflects on events in the electronics assembly industry every Friday.
Lots of refreshing progress news this week, as well as partnerships galore. Encouraging personnel announcements, as well as tradeshow announcements and a prediction, made an appearance this week, too. Let's get to it:
- Some award news: Frost & Sullivan presented the Frost & Sullivan Award for Product Line Strategy in the world SMT soldering equipment and materials market to Flemington, N.J.-based DEK, and its 2003 Market Leadership Award to Palo Alto, Calif.-based Agilent Technologies for its worldwide leadership in the signal sources market. Meanwhile, Ewing, N.J.-based Universal Display Corp. won two $100,000 Phase I SBIR contracts from the U.S. Department of Energy to demonstrate techniques to improve OLED power efficiencies. Jim Kuehn of Harrisburg, Pa.-based Tyco Electronics was presented with the Minneapolis-based SMTA's "Excellence in Leadership" Award at SMTA International last month, and Northbrook, Ill.-based IPC — Association Connecting Electronics Industries honored Werner Engelmaier of Engelmaier Associates LC with the 2003 Raymond E. Prichard IPC Hall of Fame Award at its Annual Meeting. San Diego-based KIC was awarded a U.S. patent on a technology that improves their 24/7 Virtual Profiler. And Frenchtown, N.J.-based Aries Electronics received its ISO 9001:2000 upgrade certification, based on an audit performed by the company's independent audit company, Houston-based Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance. Finally, in financial progress, Lake Success, N.Y.-based Park Electrochemical Corp.'s Board of Directors declared a quarterly dividend of 6 cents per share, payable November 2, and Moorpark, Calif.-based SMTEK International Inc. learned that it meets the requirements for continued listing on the Nasdaq SmallCap Market.
- Partnership and alliance news: Stamford, Conn.-based FeinFocus has formed a strategic cooperative agreement with Des Plaines, Ill.-based Kester for Kester to offer FeinFocus X-ray services to customers in the Midwest. In the meantime, Syracuse, N.Y.-based Eraser Co. Inc. is designing and manufacturing custom multi-output electronic temperature controllers for Cape Canaveral, Fla.-based United Space Alliance, and Phoenix-based Duraswitch executed a non-exclusive license agreement with Bologna, Italy-based OXI s.r.l. Finally, Agilent Technologies will establish an electronic instrument measurement automation lab at Huazong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in China.
- Personnel news: Binghamton, N.Y.-based Universal Instruments Corp. announced that Brad Bennett is moving to Europe to take over the role of director, European operations, and Peter Bollinger will take over Bennett's old job of director, GSM platform products. IPC appointed Jo Warnier of Triple-B-Marketing as its first European representative, part of the organization's Long-Range Plan to be established as a globally recognized association for the electronics interconnection industry. Greenville, S.C.-based KEMET Corp. added Joseph B. Swann, president of Rockwell Automation Power Systems, and Frank G. Brandenburg, corporate vice president and sector president of Northrop Grumman Corp., to its Board of Directors. Finally, Dennis Wood, former chairman and CEO of C-MAC Industries Inc. resigned from Milpitas, Calif.-based Solectron Corp.'s Board of Directors to pursue personal business interests.
- Tradeshow news: Stephen Montgomery, president of San Mateo, Calif.-based ElectroniCast Corp., will present at OptiComm 2003 next week in Dallas, while IRPS issued a call for papers for its 42nd conference next April in Phoenix.

This just in: According to this week's Quick Vote about tin whiskers, 48 percent of you are implementing a tin-based solder as an alternative to tin/lead, 26 percent of you use a non-tin replacement for tin/lead, but are concerned with tin-based solders from others, 26 percent of you are not concerned about tin whiskers, and 26 percent of you are not sure.
