SMTA Releases TechScan Compendiums on Lead-free and 0201 Technology
September 2, 2003 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
Minneapolis — The Surface Mount Technology Association (SMTA) is producing two compendiums of technical articles that focus on lead-free and 0201 technology that will be released at its annual conference, SMTA International (September 21 through 25, 2003, at the Donald Stephens Convention Center, Rosemont, Ill.).
The SMTA TechScan Compendium on The State-of-the-Art in Pb-Free Soldering Technology was edited by Paul T. Vianco, Ph.D. of Sandia National Labs and begins with a white paper from 1992, "Assessment of the Use of Lead in Electronic Assembly," by Greg Munie, Kester Solder (then with AT&T Bell Laboratories). With the WEEE directive data set to July 1, 2006, this compendium stands as the most comprehensive source of information on lead-free technology currently available. The articles span the decade of 1992 through 2002 and are arranged according to the topics of Materials (including solder alloys, electrically conductive adhesives and surface finishes), Processes and Reliability.
The SMTA TechScan Compendium on 0201 Design, Assembly and Process was edited by Tom Borkes of The Jefferson Project and contains work done in addressing the daunting challenges related to 0201 components in electronics assembly. The importance of developing a capable process and the crucial need for process control are emphasized, but beyond that, this compendium provides a "toolbox" of strategies and methods to overcome these challenges.
The two SMTA TechScan Compendiums will serve as resources to assist readers in achieving implementation of lead-free technology and 0201 process success, and they will be available for sale beginning on-site at SMTA International and afterward in the SMTA Bookstore.
The SMTA membership is a network of professionals who build skills, share practical experience and develop solutions in electronic assembly technologies and related business operations. For more information, visit www.smta.org.
