Original Design Manufacturers to Discuss Intellectual Property Protection
January 17, 2003 |Estimated reading time: 2 minutes
Alameda, Calif. -- On March 6, 2003, executives from original design manufacturers (ODMs) will speak on a panel entitled, "Intellectual Property Protection and Comparisons with Electronic Manufacturing Services Companies" to address name-brand electronic equipment makers' increasing yet cautious use of companies that provide not only manufacturing services but also their own line of product designs.
The panel is part of Technology Forecasters Inc.'s Quarterly Forum for Electronics Manufacturing Outsourcing and Supply Chain, to be held at member Varian Electronics Manufacturing's facility in Tempe, Ariz.
The panelists comprise executives in general management and research and development from ODM companies Arima Group, Foxconn (Hon Hai), Elite Industrial Group, LG-Philips and others. This panel will help outsourcing decision makers at OEM companies understand unique differences between working with an ODM's designs and simply outsourcing manufacturing according to the OEM's own design.
Many of the panel questions, developed by Quarterly Forum members such as Hewlett Packard that use both ODMs and contract manufacturers, address intellectual property protection. Unlike use of contract manufacturers, reliance on ODMs means that the OEM customer is using another company's design for their products. Plus, most ODMs have facilities in China and a growing number of piracy cases in China are in the news.
In addition to intellectual property protection, issues to be discussed by the panelists will cover engineering resources that go beyond that of a contract manufacturer, how ODMs keep their OEM customer cost competitive over time, after-sale service, and how ODMs handle the logistics of getting products to the end user via direct ship or other distribution channel.
In addition to the ODM panel, other strategy discussions to be held at the March 6th Quarterly Forum include "Supply Chain Software: Data Flow through the Product Lifecycle," "Software Panel: Strategies to Enable Cost Savings and Superior Communication between OEMs and Outsourcing Partners," "Surviving the Industry Downturn, by Varian Inc. Electronics Manufacturing's Vice President Wilson Rudd," "Reducing Supply-Chain Costs and Risks through Environmental and Waste-Reduction Steps," and "The Consumer Electronics Market: Trends & Strategies for Outsourcing."
The Quarterly Forum is presented by strategic consulting firm Technology Forecasters Inc., and comprises 15 industry reports and four events each year.
TFI is a strategic consulting firm helping OEM executives to improve outsourcing strategy, EMS executives to increase revenues and profitability, and suppliers of software, capital equipment and components to increase their share in the growing outsourcing markets.
