Greensboro, N.C. -- RF Micro Devices Inc. has launched production shipments of the RF2498 tri-band, quad-mode front end receiver to a leading Japanese handset manufacturer for use in a new dual-band, tri-mode CDMA2000 1x handset.
In addition to the high data rates enabled by CDMA2000 1x, the handset features a color screen and an integrated digital camera with flash. Shipments began in RF Micro Devices' fiscal second quarter and are expected to reach a multimillion dollar level this fiscal year.
The handset is America's first wireless phone featuring a built-in digital camera. The camera features a digital zoom and LED flash and stores quality 640 x 480 VGA photographs in an online album with online enhancement tools. In addition to the camera, the handset features WAP 2.0, Java, an enhanced 2.1" 65 thousand-color TFT LCD display, games, personalized ring tones, built-in answering machine for call screening and voice-activated dialing. There is also an external display screen that offers quick identification of incoming phone calls either through numeric caller ID or photo-caller ID. The handset is available now nationwide and fully supports advanced voice and data capabilities enabled by the U.S. CDMA2000 1x PCS system, allowing customers to check e-mail, play games with full color graphics and polyphonic sounds and browse the Internet wirelessly.
