NEPCON West, Assembly West and Fiberoptic Automation Expo Converge in Silicon Valley
January 6, 2003 |Estimated reading time: 2 minutes
Norwalk, Conn. -- NEPCON West, Assembly West and Fiberoptic Automation Expo, three co-located manufacturing tradeshows in Silicon Valley, mirrored an industry convergence between electronic manufacturing, final product assembly and fiberoptics.
Engineers are broadening their knowledge in all aspects of product assembly in order to remain competitive, and nowhere was this more apparent than at the three-day event, December 4 through 6, 2002, in the San Jose McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, Calif. More than 250 exhibits of the latest products and technology, educational sessions, and keynote addresses supported the growing trend. The event drew 3,294 industry professionals looking for and sharing information and solutions on how to improve manufacturing productivity and efficiency.
Two keynote addresses focused on the future as well. Michael Mace, chief competitive officer of PalmSource Inc., delivered a keynote address on the future of the mobile device market to a standing room only crowd. In his talk, Mace forecasted the way people will use mobile devices in the future and technology's role in initiating the changes. The keynote presentation on day two by Jeff Montgomery, chairman of ElectroniCast Inc. dealt with automation's impact on the fiberoptic industry. Montgomery presented analysis of how industry restructuring will take place and how automation will increase yields and lower costs.
Another highlight of the event was the extensive three-discipline conference program mirroring the show-floor. Educational sessions developed by the SMTA (Surface Mount Technology Association) gave attendees the opportunity to gain a broad perspective of critical industry issues with specific answers to the problems that they now face everyday. A who's-who list of presenting companies included; 3M, Adept Technology, Agilent Technologies, Celestica, Dow Corning, Flextronics, IBM, JDS Uniphase, Lockheed Martin, Motorola, National Instruments, Nokia, Solectron and Teradyne. Along with the traditional conference, the NEPCON West/Assembly West/Fiberoptic Automation Expo event featured eight well-attended free-to-all special conference sessions.
For 2003, the event will reflect the feedback from this year's participants. The show will be moved to October 28 and 29, instead of December, and the three-day event will be compressed to two days.
NEPCON West is the nation's longest-running electronics manufacturing exhibition and conference. Fiberoptic Automation Expo is the only exhibition and conference dedicated to providing fiberoptic component manufacturers with the automation solutions and assembly techniques needed to increase production and keep up with demand. Assembly West is the region's only event dedicated to product assembly, featuring solutions for building new products, increasing capacity, and reducing costs and cycle times.
