NEMA Lamp Manufacturers Reduce Use of Mercury by 67 Percent

The NEMA Lamp Section recently conducted a survey of its members to determine the amount of mercury used in lamps and the average mercury level in a standard 4' fluorescent lamp. In 2001, lamp manufacturers used nine tons of mercury in lamps, a 67 percent reduction from the 27 tons manufacturers used in 1990. Lamp manufacturers also reduced their average use of mercury in four-foot lamps to 8.3 milligrams. This represents an 80 percent decline from the 41.6-milligram average mercury level in these lamps in 1990.
