AOI Equipment Selector roundup
December 31, 1969 |Estimated reading time: 5 minutes
With the miniaturization of components, advances in assembly technology and the increase in board throughput, visual examination of printed circuit boards (PCB) is a critical and necessary step in ensuring quality. SMT presents the following automated optical inspection (AOI) Equipment Roundup, spotlighting an assortment of available products.
Optical Inspection Machine
AutoInspector 1820 Ultra is said to use exclusive quad-speed cameras with flying camera technology with a 120-image per second inspection rate, ..allowing the machine to match the throughput speed of any line without losing accuracy. The high-mechanical precision reportedly is derived from the machine's rigid construction and linear motors operated in closed feedback, with a resolution pixel size down to 15 µm. Machine Vision Products Inc., Carlsbad, Calif. www.onlinecenter.to/smt.
AOI System
SV-6000 AOI system is said to feature built-in learning capability and field-proven defect detection. Designed for high-pulse production of large-format, high-density and small component printed wiring assemblies, the system's patented feature-based software reportedly enables manufacturers to identify all visible defect types, including component lead and solder defects, as well as random defects. The company's statistical process control software also is said to record and analyze inspection data automatically. Photon Dynamics Inc., San Jose, Calif. www.onlinecenter.to/smt.
Inspection System
Featuring dual CCD color cameras with resolutions of 16 and 8 mm, ESV 304 AOI system reportedly can inspect parts with different sizes and pitches to gain flexibility without losing inspection speed. The system is said to use high-precision linear scale on both X- and Y-axis movement for repeatability less than ±0.001" and maximum driving speed of 27.6" per second. Qualectron Systems Corp., San Jose, Calif. www.onlinecenter.to/smt.
Solder Joint Inspection
KS 75 is a post-reflow AOI system for solder joint inspection. By using color imaging technology and Statistical Appearance Modeling (SAM) software, the system reportedly is capable of analyzing and recognizing SMT and through-hole defects with low false calls. Features are said to include the ability to identify bridges on leaded devices including ultra-fine-pitch QFPs; locating missing, insufficient or excess solder; and verifying the presence, identity, polarity and location of components as small as 0201s. CyberOptics, Minneapolis, Minn. www.onlinecenter.to/smt.
Solder Paste Inspection System
Vi-1000SP AOI system is for PCB solder paste inspection at speeds up to 1 million pads per hour. The ..system is said to verify insufficient or excessive paste deposition on pads, thereby preventing dry joints, bridging and tombstoning during reflow. The inspection system reportedly comes equipped with Vectoral Imaging technology, which is said to compare the graphical characteristics (or vectors) of inspected components with known "standards" that are maintained in a customer-defined library supplied with the system. ViTechnology LLC, Haverhill, Mass. www.onlinecenter.to/smt.
Three-in-one System
ScanPoint AOI system is designed to verify solder paste deposition, component placement and reflow quality. Having all three types of inspection in one system is said to reduce the complexity associated with dedicated AOI systems. The system reportedly verifies solder paste deposition absence and presence before the components are placed on the board. This ensures that sufficient solder has been placed on the pads, which is said to reduce voids and bridging during reflow. DiagnoSYS Systems Inc., Kissimmee, Fla.www.onlinecenter.to/smt.
Final Assembly Inspection
K2-AOI is a large-format color imaging system that reportedly features 16 million colors and 6 million ..pixel sensors. This system is said to measure component features, even on 0201s, capturing far more accurate and reliable data. The system also features an adaptive resolution strategy that allows sub-mil extraction. Additionally, the maximum image size of 4 x 4" allows fast throughput. Vectron Inc., San Diego, Calif. www.onlinecenter.to/smt.
Tabletop AOI System
VT-MOUSE tabletop inspection system is for solder and component inspection in post-assembly inspection. The system reportedly inspects component presence/absence, polarity, tombstoning and solder defects like the company's larger AOI machines, but at a size targeted toward low-volume applications. The system is said to offer true color inspection and the company's patented color highlight technology to find hard-to-detect solder defects and component irregularities. Omron Electronics LLC, Schaumburg, Ill. www.onlinecenter.to/smt.
AOI Stencil Verification
AOI of EtchGuard laser cut stencils is achieved using the LPKF ScanCheck technology. The new equipment reportedly provides an image analysis of every laser cut stencil at 12,000 dpi to ensure quality and reliability. The equipment automatically does a comparative inspection against original Gerber data to locate any aperture faults such as absence/presence, shape, blockage, position and size. The company then furnishes a detailed inspection report, showing defects and the exact amount of deviation in any category. MicroScreen LLC, South Bend, Ill. www.onlinecenter.to/smt.
Micron Level Inspection System<
A new automated final vision inspection system reportedly is for micron level inspection of BGAs, PCBs and lead frame strips. The product range comes in either a strip inspection machine EYEspex or reel-to-reel format EYEline. Features are said to include inspection through solder mask; 100 percent inspected and sorted HDI or high lead-count products; accurate, fast and reliable measurement; simultaneous top and bottom inspection; automatic statistical reporting for tracing defects in production; easy graphical input for teach mode and report; and easy change for one type of strip to another. The Douthitt Corp., Detroit, Mich. www.onlinecenter.to/smt.
AOI Paste Inspection System
OptiCon Paste Inspection 2-D AOI system is said to allow checking the solder paste print for positioning and missing or blurred solder paste. The heart of the ..system is said to be a matrix-camera with a shadow-free illumination unit. The solder paste is recognized on the basis of a detection algorithm. Even different basic materials and solder stop lacquer are said to have no influence on the test result. The system reportedly allows inspection of PCBs with a maximum size of 400 x 430 mm. GOEPEL electronic GmbH, Jena, Germany. www.onlinecenter.to/smt.
Optical Inspection System
VPI-1000 optical inspection system is said to offer an on-screen magnification range of 100 to 175X, ..as well as the ability to inspect under components with a standoff as low as 0.002". A specially designed optical tip is said to require a 0.043" distance between components. The patent-pending mirrored tip/lens interface reportedly allows users to look under BGA, CSP and LGA packages in spite of low standoff heights. Metcal Inc., Menlo Park, Calif. www.onlinecenter.to/smt.
Backplane AOI
Model 505-BP is a high-coverage, easy-to-program AOI system for larger backplanes/backpanels. This model reportedly offers advanced software capabilities in a much larger package than other models. The system's inspection area is said to be 24 x 36". Testronics, McKinney, Texas. www.onlinecenter.to/smt.
Automatic Inspection Systems
NSpec F Series AOI systems for circuit assemblies reportedly offer "on-the-fly" zoom for small component inspection, fine-wire technology, good accuracy and throughput, and simple programming. Reportedly, more than 1,300 of these systems currently are in use worldwide. Christopher Associates Inc., Santa Ana, Calif. SMTwww.onlinecenter.to/smt.
