Minneapolis -- The SMTA announces its election results for the Board of Directors for the term that begins at SMTA International (September 22 through 26, 2002).
Rod Howell, Libra Industries (Mentor, Ohio) was reelected for a two-year term as president. Elected to three-year terms were Dan Baldwin, Ph.D., Siemens Dematic (Norcross, Ga.); and incumbents Mike Buseman, Manufacturers' Services Ltd. (Arden Hills, Minn.), and Paul Vianco, Ph.D. Sandia National Labs (Albuquerque, N.M.).
Rod Howell is president and co-founder of Libra Industries. Founded in 1980, Libra Industries is an electronics manufacturing services (EMS) provider and has been awarded the Fast Track 50 (seven years), Weatherhead 100 (seven years), North Coast 99 (three years), and Inside Business NEO Success (two years). Howell's goals for the SMTA include strengthening SMTA chapters around the world, ensuring the SMTA is a financially strong organization, expanding the educational program, developing closer relationships with industry-related organizations, and devoting the resources necessary to ensure SMTA is at the forefront of providing technical information via electronic media.
Mike Buseman, vice president and general manager of Manufacturers' Services Ltd., has been in the electronics industry for 19 years and will continue as SMTA vice president of membership. His experience has been across the entire range of manufacturing technologies and has included process development, manufacturing operations, customer interface, and various technical and management roles. He has experience in both the EMS and OEM environments. His primary objective with the SMTA over the next three years will be to focus on the development and expansion of SMTA membership benefits.
Paul Vianco, Ph.D., is a principal member of the technical staff at Sandia National Labs, where he has been involved in electronics manufacturing and assembly since 1987. His responsibilities there have included work on rigid circuit board, flex circuit and hybrid microcircuit electronics. His specific areas of expertise include process development for high-reliability military electronics as well as for commercial contractors. In his continuing role on the SMTA Board, he believes he can provide benefit to both the industry and SMTA members by addressing current critical issues in the development of technical programs.
Vice president of Siemens Dematic Dan Baldwin has 11 years experience in the electronics manufacturing and polymer processing industries, four U.S. patents, more than 90 scholarly publications, and expertise in electronics packaging, MEMS packaging, advanced materials processing and manufacturing systems design. He looks forward to extending the technical programs and technical reputation of the SMTA and will actively promote new membership initiatives within universities and colleges to help continue the strong foundation and involvement of tomorrow's leaders in the SMTA.
Those remaining on the SMTA Board of Directors include vice president of technical programs Ken Gilleo, Ph.D., Cookson Electronics; vice president of communications Evelyn Baldwin, 3M Co.; treasurer David Raby, Soldering Technology International; and Planning Committee members Joanne DeBlis, Mask Technology; Julian Partridge, Staktek; Viswam Puligandla, Nokia Mobile Phones; Don Swenson, Honeywell International; and Sammy Yi, Flextronics International.
