Aqueous Circuit Board CleanerCBW-218 OmniJet aqueous circuit board cleaning system was redesigned for the electronics assembly and semiconductor packaging industries. The system now features an all-stainless steel construction, sustained high-solution heat capability, high-volume "EDM" spray bar with greater GPM concentration per sq. in., and a convection-type dryer with adjustable blow-off knives that reportedly produce high-velocity water strip action. Turret-based Chip ShootersThe CP-7 machine features a reported tact time of 0.068 seconds per chip (52,941 placements per hour) and a footprint of less than 39 sq. ft. The system places components ranging from 0201 microchips to 19 mm2. Each of the machine's 16 placement heads can be fitted with six different-sized nozzles for greater control and increased speed. PCB load time is 1.2 seconds, reduced to 0.6 seconds when the machine's dual board load function is employed. Fuji America Corp., Vernon Hills, Ill.
Solder MachinesThe high-volume production line of wavesolder machines reportedly include many standard features, such as slide-out microprocessor membrane keypad control with programmable menu capacity of 100 recipes; motorized conveyor width adjustment; and motorized stainless steel roll-out solder pot to provide easy access. Systems are available in 14 to 24" wide waves and offer complete visibility through tempered safety glass and easy lift-out access panels. Other standard features include foam fluxer and air knife with pressure regulators; solder level sensor with alarm; low-temperature solder pump disable; and powerful reflective quartz long-wave infrared emitter technology with top and bottom preheater reflectors. PCB Inspection SoftwareORION PCB Inspection Software features data manager, data monitoring and data analysis capabilities. The data manager tool reportedly provides faster storage and retrieval of archived inspection data, allowing product traceability while reducing the amount of valuable data storage space required. The data monitoring tool is said to allow control engineers to have an early warning system to quickly address process problems on-line before an emergency occurs. The software can perform root cause analysis to improve production processes by generating Excel reports, allowing users to send reports to management. Omron Electronics Inc., Schaumburg, Ill.

Retrofit EyepieceThe ISIS accessory is a retrofit that replaces traditional eyepieces on binocular stereo and research microscopes. The accessory slides into the host microscope tubes in the same fashion as the original OEM eyepieces, and may be retrofitted to existing eyepiece tubes of microscopes manufactured by Leica, Nikon, Olympus, Wild, Zeiss and more. Without any resolution loss, the eyepiece reportedly offers a substantial increase in the distance between a user's eyes and the microscope itself. The 39 mm viewing distance allows operators to wear prescription or safety glasses and to avoid physical contact with the unit. Vision Engineering, New Milford, Conn.
Test Socket LinePGA ZIF Test Sockets, with a new 9 x 9 grid size version, were designed to allow the use of one socket to handle a full range of device sizes, footprints and pin counts. A strong metal cam in the socket activates the ZIF's normally closed contacts, reportedly eliminating a dependency on plastic to sustain contact force. The stainless steel handle may be provided on either the right or left side, and the new socket plugs into standard PGA sockets and features replaceable pins. Aries Electronics, Frenchtown, N.J.

Micro-abrasive Blasting ControlAn ergonomically designed handpiece feature for micro-abrasive blasting projects, TouchStart is said to give an operator pinpoint control at the touch of a finger. Originally developed for stealth technology, the product has broad applications for projects that require finite control of closely detailed work. Because the start/stop trigger mechanism is controlled by gentle pressure on the hand piece, it can be used for remote operations when needed to perform precision micro-abrasion some distance away from the blasting unit. Various applications for this product include precision cleaning, cutting, deburring, surface preparation and material removal on various surfaces ranging from delicate silicon wafers to hardened steel. Dry Strip SystemThe ENVIRO Advanced Dry Strip System is a solvent and acid-free, photo-resist stripper and residue removal tool. The product reportedly eliminates the need for wet stripping processes that use hydroxyl-amine-based or other types of solvents. Traditional acid treatments, such as H2SO4/H2O2 strips, HF dips or alcohol rinses are not needed with this cleaner, thus reducing the need for storing and disposing hazardous chemical waste materials. It is a multi-chamber, single-wafer (150 to 200 mm) dry-resist and polymer-removal system that incorporates both microwave downstream and low-energy RIE plasma. PCB X-rayVJ-2000 LS reportedly is a high-resolution X-ray inspection system designed specifically to support the large backplane boards in the PCB industry. The system comes with a closed loop, servo-driven, board-handling device that can locate components with reportedly better than 0.002" (2 mil) accuracy. Further, the CAD-based programmability feature is said to enable the programming of the system to inspect boards from the convenience of the engineer's desktop. V.J. Technologies Inc., Bohemia, N.Y.
Frame GrabberMatrox Orion frame grabber features a multifaceted board that supports standard color/monochrome video capture and integrates a display section based on the MGA G400 graphics controller. The grabber's transfer rates are said to allow for the design of rich user interfaces, provide faster graphics updates and free uphost CPU cycles to handle other tasks. The product can capture standard analog composite and S-Video in NTSC/PAL formats, and composite RS-170/CCIR video formats. It also includes discrete analog-to-digital converters for capturing component RGB in NTSC/PAL video formats. Motion Control TechnologyA new and expanded 120-page catalog on digital motion control technology has been published for 2001.The catalog presents details on the company's Optima, Econo and Legacy Series, and highlights an expansive section on its Ethernet technology (E-Series), the newest addition to the controller line. This new series reportedly provides several benefits, including the elimination of complicated programming inherent of distributed control systems and extensive wiring required of central- or bus-based systems. The catalog contains detailed specifications for DMC-based controller models as well as a technical reference guide with a review of motion control including the elements of a servo system, tuning and programming. ESD Control Products CatalogA new catalog for ESD control products features 700 items designed and manufactured for anyone using sensitive electronics devices. The catalog is divided into sections on personnel grounding, floor grounding, work surface grounding, mat materials, packaging, test equipment, ionization, education and accessories, and production tools. Fine-pitch PlacementTwo new products were designed to complement each other to boost placement capability of fine-pitch components to 6,100 cph with an accuracy of 15 μm at 3 σ LVS and Midas. The LVS high-speed touchless centering system, which inspects and aligns fine-pitch components on the fly, ensures placements of all leaded and BGA-type components and is best suited when mount speed is critical. Midas places large ultra-fine-pitch components and uses a 10,000-pulse encoder that is connected directly to the theta motor. This, in turn, is connected directly to the tool holder, enabling what is said to be a precise, fast and carefully controlled movement. MYDATA automation Inc., Peabody, Mass.
Modular Chip MounterReportedly capable of placing up to 40,000 cph, Create cm202-DH Modular Chip Mounter is said to offer unlimited expansion capabilities, flexibility and productivity for high-density component placement. Engineered for placing small components including 0201 components at spacing as close as 0.15 mm in a production setting, the chip mounter uses a four-head design with a total of 24 nozzles. A double-feeder configuration includes up to 204 feeders. The modular design of the product reportedly uses 44.5 sq. ft. of production floor space. REWORK/REPAIR
BGA Rework SystemThe launch of an enhanced version of a BGA array rework system includes two models, CSP-3500, designed for smaller chip scale rework and BGA-3590, with high-powered underboard heating for thermally demanding PCBs. Reportedly pivotal to the system enhancements is the addition of an imaging camera that provides sharpness and definition when working on fine-pitch CSP components. The camera's ability to provide optimum clarity is said to improve an integral vision system that simplifies both component placement and stencil alignment. Metcal, Menlo Park, Calif.

SPC SystemMobile SPC is a wireless statistical process control system that reportedly allows workers to roam freely about the production facility and perform all their SPC functions without traditional computer network cabling constraints. The system consists of three components: Synergy 2000, 32-bit software designed for enterprise quality management; the mobile SPC personal computer that weighs less than 3.5 lb; and wireless network access.
