Kick-off reception. Enjoy a free reception on the show floor Tuesday, March 14. Meet with colleagues and suppliers to review APEX`s opening day and to make plans to make the most of your time at APEX.

Standardization framework for supply chain integration. The National Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (NEMI) and IPC are co-developing a suite of standards for communicating on the factory floor and throughout the supply chain. The NEMI Plug & Play Factory Project will demonstrate XML-based factory integration on their multi-industry testbed centered at the Georgia Institute of Technology. This effort will standardize the language used by assembly placement and test equipment. The NEMI Virtual Factory Information Interchange Project will present their progress towards an XML-based integration that will describe components and materials enabling more efficient OEM/CM collaboration.
General Schwarzkopf storms APEX. General H. Norman Schwarzkopf (Ret.) began his 35-year military career when he graduated from West Point in 1956. From there he served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War, where he was twice wounded and decorated with three Silver Stars, three Bronze Stars and the Distinguished Service Medal. Schwarzkopf attained the rank of general in 1978 but truly captured the admiration of the public when he served as commander-in-chief of operations for Desert Shield and Desert Storm in the 1991 Persian Gulf War. When he retired in 1991, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George Bush. SMT
Since his retirement, Schwarzkopf has published his autobiography, It Doesn`t Take a Hero, which was an international bestseller. He is also actively involved in such charities as the Starbright Foundation, an organization for seriously ill children.
Schwarzkopf`s keynote presentation, "Leadership: From the War Room to the Board Room," illustrates the motivational skills it takes to lead people. He is known as an experienced manager who understands people and the principles it takes for successful leadership. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to see one of America`s living heroes.

Gala reception. What`s in store at the Wednesday night Gala? Magicians, jugglers, acrobats and mimes will roam through the crowd, dazzling with their spectacles. A variety of food stands will feature entrees ranging from All-American favorites to ethnic classics such as Italian and Mexican delicacies. Background musicians will provide an atmosphere perfect for networking and greeting your colleagues.
Later in the evening, step outside to the main tent to hear the Gala headliners, the funky rock group, WAR. Their recent album, Peace Sign, has found new fans and rekindled old ones. Enjoy their syncopated Latin rhythms as you dance the night away.
NEMI roadmap kickoff. Immediately following APEX, NEMI will kick off its 2000 roadmapping effort with a day-long meeting in Long Beach, Calif., on Friday, March 17. Every two years, NEMI brings together leaders from all aspects of the North American electronics industry to chart the future manufacturing technology needs of the industry. Their purpose is to identify the key technology and infrastructure developments required to ensure the competitiveness of North American electronics manufacturing companies over the next decade.
