Q1 North American EMS Market Snapshot
April 9, 2014 | I-Connect007Estimated reading time: 2 minutes
Over 370 industry professionals answered the call to take our first-ever quarterly market survey. This one-minute survey is designed to provide a snapshot of the current state of the EMS and PCB industries. We designed the survey to be short and sweet, with a focus on the most important questions, which will give us all a look at where we’ve been and where we’re headed. Based on the results so far, we believe, with your help, we’ve been able to capture a fairly accurate picture of the current state of our industries.
You can access the entire survey by following this link: Q1 Market Survey.
The EMS Industry in North America
Q1 Results
What’s very encouraging is that about 68% of those responding experienced growth in the first quarter, with 28% posting “good” or “strong” growth.
Q2 Forecast
In looking at Q2, 78% (up from 68% in Q1) believe they will grow, with 28% (same as Q1) expecting “good” or “strong” growth.
Outlook for 2014
IPC's Sharon Starr says they're predicting 2.2% growth for the North American EMS industry for 2014. Walt Custer says that number could be some where between 2-4%. Here’s the forecast from our participants:
The chart above would seem out of sync with IPC's numbers and maybe a bit more aligned with Walt's based on the size of the companies responding and the marketshare they represent, which the next chart details:
Now, the numbers seem to correspond a bit better since we can see that 84% of those responding generated less than $100 million in annual revenue.
If you missed it, here’s Walt Custer’s market update interview from last month’s IPC APEX EXPO 2014.
Hiring and Equipment Purchases in Q2
The survey also asks about hiring. Fifty-four percent of respondents said they will be hiring while 46% say they won’t. Regarding new equipment, 52% said they will be buying new equipment which bodes well for equipment suppliers.
